  • It would probably be better quality if you spent the huge dollarydoos that GoPro want for their products, but I've found that a simple dash cam of a decent spec works just as well.

It only becomes an issue when you want to start mounting it onto things like your helmet that dash cams become an issue. But if you are just looking at mounting it to the windscreen to record your laps, get something like the Viofo with the GPS attachment.

Then, if you like the sport and want a camera with more functions and over lays and all the rest of that, then look at going big and getting the latest GoPro.

I still use my Sony and two of my old Contour cameras for anything sports related.

  • I used a GoPro 4 back when I did lots of track days. It's about the FPS.

    I'd won't hesitate to get a Hero 9 today.

    4K+60FPS and stability control 🤤

Also, I mounted driver's right headrest looking at wheel and techometers, and two on left headrest looking straight ahead and straight behind.

I had those three cams on mirror left, mirror right and underbody close to the radiator. Lost two in one day. :(

Something like this will work with most action cams and most serious cameras in general https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/572770 You can get this thing for like $8 these days btw. Could be a hazard on a track if it gets bumped off your vehicle.

I wouldn't put something like this on your helmet, probably could increase your odds of death if you crash. Helmets are engineered very carefully and there's nothing bolted to them when they test them.

  • Go pro's and their software is the best in business. Would definitely recommend a good case since you will be taking it to the track

Whatever you get, get something with in camera stabilisation. Otherwise you will get a shaky mess.

  • What's the purpose of recording? It's better to figure out why, and the requirements if any, and go from there.

If it's just a hobby thing, grab a GoPro. I haven't used one in a while (ver 6 was the last I used) but I believe they have stabilization (probably software) built in since version 7.

On a side note, if he's just chasing really cool looking footage, the closer you get the camera to the ground, it will feel artifically faster to the audience.

Tshow mentioned, it's easy to lose the cameras. When mounting, there's safety cables you can attach to help with that. It won't help with the camera being hit and destroyed, but it can help reduce the amount of lost cameras.

  • I used to use Harrys Laptimer - does cool things like overlaying g forces, track position etc onto your video. Look it up, cheap app for great results.

  • I think for the track car it will be mounted on the roll cage.

Initially just to capture laps. But may use it as a tool to better lap times i dare say when the buzz has worn off.
