I'm after my first proper socket set as I intend to do some DIY car maintenance and other odd jobs around the home. The ToolPro set contains more sockets in 1/4 and 1/2 sizes but does not include the 3/8 size. I also don't know how good the quality of this set stacks up against Stanley.

Maybe someone with a bit more tool knowledge could shed some light on what would be the better buy?

  • I have a toolpro 199 piece set and can't complain for routine DIY and Japanese cars. Euro cars I'll need an additional torx set.

    IMO If you have 1/4 and 1/2 you don't really need 3/8.

      you need a 3/8 for a lot of serpentine belts though. Certainly still useful when you dont have enough clearance and a 1/4" is useless unless its small interior of a car type stuff. Ill use a 3/8 way more than a 1/2 or 1/4 as 1/2 is too big a lot of the time. Personaly stanley stuff is crap now and I wouldnt touch this lol

    Personally I would go for the Toolpro set. The type of ratchet on the Stanley may not be as strong (I've broken one before), and if you're working on a vehicle the breaker bar in the Toolpro will be useful. Also more variety of socket sizes in the Toolpro.
    Note the Toolpro doesn't have a carry case - it's designed to sit in a tool chest so may not be handy if you want to store it in the car.

    Bought this tool set, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/535098, very happy with the quality and the range of sockets and bits. Only thing missing is a breaker bar. Unfortunately it's discontinued but this one also has good reviews and if you can wait for it to be on sale would be worth getting:

  • does anyone know if this set is a 6pt or 12pt. or a mix?

    43 tooth seems pretty low and not good for tight spots..

    1/2" Drive metric sockets: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 27, 30, 32mm

    Not sure why so many new socket sets still have SAE. Is there really that many new SAE fittings released.
