Crappy Mondeo to The Wreckers?

I have a 2012 Ford Mondeo diesel.

I bought it at auction in 2014 or so for $12k. It was a good deal then.

It has been pretty solid except for a few minor bits and pieces.. but mostly no dramas. It has a tugboat for an engine but is great on the motorway. Has scrapes/dings etc.

It's giving me a 'Limited transmission' warning on the dash which is apparently likely to demonstrate that the entire transmission needs replacing. I think the cost to repair would be worth more than the car itself.

I just bought a new battery and recently had an Android Auto head unit installed. Is it worth trying to explain this to the wreckers to increase the offer? Or should I go to the effort of stripping these out? Would anyone be interested in buying the car with these issues that suggests I should try and sell privately?

  • That's auctions for you mate, usually no warranty and AS IS, remove the stereo if you want to, wreckers still give you pennies on the dollar for your car.

For the most money you are better off listing the car privately but be honest about the known issues.

Have you actually had a quote to fix or replace transmission?

It may not be the whole transmission and it would be worthwhile getting the ECU scanned before throwing the car away!

    • No quote yet. I'll call the mechanic tomorrow.

I did get told at my pink slip inspection not to spend anymore money on the car if it fails, as the "tugboat" thing I mentioned was a crappy transmission.

I actually reckon I've done ok.. we got such a good price back at the auction and for an 8 yo car at the end of its life, I'm glad I paid $12k rather than $30k.

I'll never buy a Ford again though.

      • Just get the ECU scanned asap

Wreckers will give you virtually nothing for it. If its registered you might be able to sell it for a bit more than the combined value of rego plus what the wreckers might give you as scrap value.

    • I don't understand why someone would buy it though?

It's got about 6 months rego.. (I wonder if I get that back if I hand back the plates?)

You don’t have to understand why! Could be someone with a good tranny but stuffed engine. Could be someone who wants cheap wheels for a few weeks then they’ll dump it.

If you try to sell it cheap (but more than wrecker value) for a while and you succeed you’re in front. If not, there’s always the wreckers.

People are lunatics. Doesn't matter why. As euphemistic said, wreckers will give you nothing for it, and they sure don't care about your battery or head unit.

Some weirdo on gumtree will buy it for $500-1000 thinking they will give it a backyard fix and she'll be right.

      • Minus administration fees and stamp duty fees then you'll get the refund*

Because some people know how to fix things easy for not much money and can flip the car in a week after repairs for a lot more than you sold it.

        • Not a powershift Mondeo 😂

  • Yes exactly someone may just need the engine or the diff or may want to turn the car into a speedway car LOL you never know

  • you'd be suprised what people would buy

sold a car years ago, no rego, unroadworthy, hole in radiator from a tow-ball (friend crashed into parked car)

put it on ebay for $1200 as is, sort of as a joke, just see what happened. free listing so why not?

sold in an hour to a mechanic that wanted a car for his son. he fixed it up himself.

now those car wreckers had offered me $200

Have you considered just driving the car as long as it will keep moving?
The light might stay on for years before the transmission fails.

    • yea then the tow fee to get it off the road and home might kill that thought. :(

      • I have road service membership, and drive cheap cars, so it isn't a big fear.

      • If you never drive more than X km from your favourite mechanic, where X is the number of km NRMA will tow it for no extra cost, then you should be fine

  • The wrecker wont care what accessories you have fitted.if you can be bothered, take the head unit out..

    2012 mondeo's are going for around $10k on gumtree with 100k k's

depending on the shape i reckon with a working transmission you should be able to get ~$7-8k from the sounds of it. Guessing a new transmission would be $3k-4k so if the wreckers give you <$3k then i'd get it fixed and sell it on gummies or marketplace or sell it to someone for $3-$4k not-fixed

    • Looks like a transmission from a wrecker is around $700. Add $1000 for labour? Hard to see it could be more.
So $1700 gets you back in the position you were in before the light came on.

Or if you are unethical, remove the error bulb and go trade it in.
