Melbourne - Chiropractors

What are your views on Chiros?

I'm tempted to try one and see how it all feels. No real back issues but I feel like my back isnt as straight as it once was.

You’re going to trigger OzBargain with that kind of question.

Pushups followed by laying on my back on the floor with my feet slightly raised has improved my posture.

    • Is the second bit srs or are you trolling?

      • It’s serious. I used to lay on a foam roller after the pushups but found laying on the floor is just as good for my posture, muscles/joints prefer the roller though.

    Good for a massage.

Some are good but don't expect a "cure".

If they ask you to take a spinal x-ray and to tell you your spine is curved, every spine has some noticeable degree of asymmetry.

They have a bad name amongst medical professionals because a lot of them make ridiculous claims, false diagnosis and fake cures.

Try going to a physio instead

What are your views on Chiros?

    They'll find a problem, that's for sure.

  • I started seeing one a couple of years ago, I never bothered before because I had a false assumption that they were just for sore backs and necks. So give it a go and you'll soon know if it's for you or not. :)

When I think of chiropractor, that hot guy from the Bachelor rings a bell. Tim robbards, he’s based in Melbourne.

  • Whatever you do, do not let them 'adjust' your neck. People have stroked out after neck manipulations.

As a physio i am probably quite bias against chiros, given I have had a fair few people tell me how they went to a chiro weekly/fortnightly/monthly for "adjustments" and either ended up with an acute injury, or worsening symptoms with no real end in sight.

As someone said above, many will take an x-ray and tell you that you're scoliotic, out of alignment etc., and give you an adjustment and book you in for more. There is no real solid evidence that any of the techniques they use actually "realign" anything, and same goes for manual therapy in physio. If you don't have back problems, its not worth going to a chiro or a physio for that matter. However, if you're concerned about your posture and you spend a long time in one position, maybe find a physio that does ergonomic assessments and get their input/advice. In fact, I wouldn't be worried about your posture unless you do have issues.

The best way to prevent any issues arising, is regular exercise, doesn't particularly matter what it is.

Give me some of that Mondragon chiropractic with the massage, individual cracking rather than a generic all over crack and the scraping.

Seriously though people say it's all placebo and doesn't actually work. So if it's placebo then it actually works?

    I recommend Alan Harper

  • I had one that worked for me, that I could probably recommend the chiropractor I saw if someone asks me how I dealt with my back pain. I went to mine because I strained my back badly from my old work.

I didn't see him thinking he'd cure my back pain, but rather for advices and pain relief. That's what I got and I am reasonably happy with the results.
He did recommend exercises that strengthens my back muscle, along with ways I could work that could lessen the strain on my back etc etc.
I am not sure about other chiropractors, though.

  • Chiropractic was founded by D. D. Palmer, a 19th century charlatan from Iowa who allegedly got the idea from a dead person during a seance. He founded the world's first 'College' of Chiropractic, and was later ran over and killed by his son who took over the business and spread it all over the world. So there's that.

  • I went to a chiropractor a few times (private health was covering it), and wasn’t really getting any benefit (went to a pretty well regarded one in South East Melbourne). Went to a physio, and it’s been night and day.

Used to get pretty bad neck pains, but I haven’t had any problems since covid started and my physio got shut down.

  • My Chiro helps me so much with my chronic back pain. I had problems for years and none else could help including physio. Admittedly I tried a lot of Chiros who were a waste of time and money. You need to find a good one, I would suggest finding one through word of mouth. Also you need to get strengthen your back through exercise if you feel uneven. If you don’t your back will go back to the way it was before treatment in no time.
