They encourage it. An owner told me it's their loss leader to get you into the store. It costs them very little and is probably a very effective promotion for them, else they wouldn't run it every year.

AA, AAA & 9V are all 62c. Some stores may have different prices but they're all on clearance.This price at my local in NSW too

OP, if you add "useful for smoke alarms" to the title, a lot more OzBargainers will notice your deal. Most people don't remember that smoke alarms use 9V batteries, so they won't think they have any use for 9V batteries.
