Didn't think I needed this free device… But send it to me!

It can sit next to those Telstra trackers I got last time.

  • +1

Order errored on completion, now showing as 79,000 points :(

    • Oh, be interesting if I get it for the 0 points.

    • +1

Considering it has had 240 clicks maybe already sold out? I already have my confirmation email from Telstra

    • Double check your email for a confirmation or your Telstra point history to see if it went through as redeemed for 0 points, as after redeeming it it'll go back up to 79K points

  • +1

    Just ordered, thanks!

  • +1

how do you become gold member?

    • +3

Spend lots of money 💰 ($3,000 or more per year)

      https://plus.telstra.com.au/howitworks

      • +1

how do you spend $3k? Im assuming corporate/SME?

        • +3

I assume it includes any Telstra spend, so 2x Mobiles + Home Internet would get you over the top

        • +3

Two home internet bundles and five mobiles

        • +2

I spend $2000 a year with Telstra, and I don’t have broadband with them.
4 mobiles, Foxtel. It adds up really quick.

        • Phone, iPad, kids phone, husband phone, broadband, etc. I’m not gold but I can see it would be easy for a family.

      • $250 a month eh. Wish Telstra sold MacBooks and stuff on yearly payments.

    • +12

Spend more then you need to with telstra, to get something cheap back in return

      • Telstra don’t charge excess data anymore. It’s convenient to not be scared of getting a huge data bill because you didn’t watch your usage like a hawk.

        • So they're in line with 99% of providers then?

          • @Drakesy: Are you sure about that? Plus Telstra let you cancel your contract penalty free, just pay out the device after. Which other telco offers that too.

        • +1

I'm stuck on a excess data phone plan - bam $10 per GB plan the second you hit the data limit

So I can't use the full data allowance before being conveinently charged for more data - they won't accept my phones data tracking as an excuse - Telstra, gotta love em

          • @Headless: Why not ask to be moved to a new plan.

            • @AustriaBargain: Tried, they said at a fee - I'm on a plan la la la

I will just ride it out until it finished in a few months time - I got my alerts on well below my limit

              • @Headless: They usually good about moving people away from old plans. Did you offer to renew as well? Just a few months away and they didn't offer to change your plan, rude.

          • @Headless:

I can't use the full data allowance before being conveinently charged for more data - they won't accept my phones data tracking as an excuse

That's because your phone won't show accurate usage, from their billing you get charged minimum session charges each time your phone is hopping between cells and reconnecting to data.

            • @Agret: Would that be in the gigs or megs? I'm gigs out

              • @Headless: Hmm only way I can think you'd be gigs out is if you're on a data share plan with another device on your plan

  • +1

    got one! thanks

  • +1

    ordered (0 points) - thanks :)
can finally upgrade from my original T-Box

  • +1

    Got one thanks!

  • +1

Thanks OP, my order was completed successfully.

    • +11

Great to hear, I made sure I did mine before posting the deal up as I know what OzBargain does to free things 🤣

  • +1

    Got it!!!
    Thanks

  • +3

Thanks for this. Actually really happy with the way Telstra is looking after gold members. Those locators we received a couple of months ago have come in very handy as well.

  • +1

    Thanks

  • +1

I bought it - but now what do I do with it lol
I already have a Chromecast, a PC and a Console connected to my TV :D hahaha

  • +2

Silver member here, showing 7000 points for me.

    • Same, but I can't seem to order it for the 7000 though!

      • mine showing 7000 + $134

        • same here.

          • @Monty1089: Yes correct, I didn't bother going through redeeming where it says 7000 + $134

        • +1

I don't think this is worth paying any money for this tbh.
Considering how cheap the Chromecast with google TV has become.

If you use Netflix, you can get one for ~45$ (reducing the 96$ of Netflix subscription)

    • -1

Normally 79,000 so 7,000 also a bargain for Silver Tier members

      • +2

Not really a bargain because it's still 7000 points +$134 for silver tier members…

        • -1

Yeah 7000 would have been a bargain. For silver members it is 55,000 points +$0 if you slide the slider, which is 30% off.

  • +2

That’s a lot of plans to have to be spending $3k a year.

    • +2

Two home broadband services and five mobiles for us.

    • +1

      Are you serious?

      1 flagship mobile plan and 1 home phone+internet = $3000+ a year.

      • +4

Sorry you better have Gigabit and Unlimited phone data or you'll have to hand in your Ozbargains membership

      • -4

You are totally getting ripped off.

For example you could be paying $109 per month for unlimited phone and 100Mbps internet through say Aussie Broadband = $1308 per year. And one single mobile phone plan can't make up that $1692 difference towards $3000. What are you paying $141 per month for mobile phone?. Maybe you should be returning your Ozbargain membership.

Oh wait maybe you're paying for over priced services through Telstra. You're already getting ripped off by default.

        • +2

          We have…

          100/20 FTTP service for $110 a month
          1000/50 FTTP service for $160 a month
          Mobile 1 $99
          Mobile 2 $116
          Mobile 3 $99
          Mobile 4 $99
          Mobile 5 $101

Less Telstra Alumni Discount of 10% I think off total bill

          • +6

@Futura: Sorry but you obviously have too much money to burn.

            • @hollykryten: We split the bill 50 50 with the in-laws 🙊

            • +1

@hollykryten: Or family members under the same plan each paying for their own mobile…

          • +1

@Futura: Telstra is doing a 1000/50 NBN plan?

            • +1

@raytriplej: Yeah it's 180 a month before discounts though… I am getting a better average on Samknows compared to when I was with Superloop 1000/50 plan so they do infact have the extra capacity

              • @Futura: I left Telstra and went to Aussie Broadband for their 1000/50 as my local Telstra store said they weren't offering it. Best I have seen though is 750mbps download and they are unwilling to fault find with those speeds. I will have to investigate with Telstra again. Thanks for the heads up.

                • @raytriplej:

Best I have seen though is 750mbps download and they are unwilling to fault find with those speeds.

Had a look to see if there was any legal obligations on the providers end and all I found from NBN documents was this:

The Statutory Infrastructure Provider (SIP) obligations ensure that all Australian premises are able to access superfast broadband services (25 Megabits per second (Mbps) or better)

Since you are achieving excess of superfast broadband service (25mbps) then you are covered by the legal obligation and since you are achieving much higher than the next closest service (100/40) i'd say your speed is reasonable. Worth trying a different provider like Superloop as a comparison though just in case you can achieve higher.

    • Small business accounts also get Telstra plus so I wonder if they're eligible for this?

    • we get our Foxtel from Telstra, 2 HD outlets with sports pack, plus one mobile phone account for my secretary. Keeps me at gold

    • I wonder if business customers with 200 active wifi dongles get points.

  • +2

    FYI
Still doesn't have the Disney app if anyone is into that.
At least not since I last checked a couple of weeks ago.

    • +4

Can confirm, no Disney+ app, and no Apple TV+ app either. Both have been requested on the Telstra forums for nearly a year (e.g. here). Both services/apps are on Roku devices in the USA, and the Telstra TV is a modified Roku box (it adds a digital TV tuner hardware, and Telstra's software), so the hardware is absolutely capable of it.

      • Yeah I'm confused why Telstra allow useless apps but apps that are popular don't?

        • +1

We can only speculate as to what's going on inside Telstra that makes it glacially slow. So these are all just personal opinions and conjecture and speculation. I have heard 3 possible factors mentioned at various points:
          * Conflict of interest. Telstra is a content provider (via BigPond movies), they have previously been a reseller of content (they resold Presto, before it was shut down). and they are a partial owner of content providers (they own 35% of foxtel and hence Binge). As such, they inherently have an incentive to ensure services they make a buck from work well and promptly, but very little incentive to ensure services that compete against them work as well or as promptly. As far as I'm aware, the same conflict doesn't exist in the USA, where Roku makes the box but not content.
          * Lack of technical expertise: Telstra might need to review or update or test the apps or software or back-end infrastructure to ensure new apps work on the Telstra TV. It's not their area of expertise, people who know what they're doing may be hard and expensive to employ here, and it just gets pushed to the back burner for ages and ages.
          * The content providers might need to enable their apps for the Telstra TV. So one suggestion has been that against each Roku app the companies need to say which devices those apps work on, and of course they enable all the popular USA Roku boxes, but the Telstra TV is a modified box from a small market that is probably not familiar to most of the app writers, and as such, without testing it, they tend to leave it off the list of supported devices, even though presumably just about all apps would work without any modification.

Whether it's these factors, or a combination of the above, I honestly have no idea. What is undeniable is that getting the apps that customers want onto the box is ludicrously slow. The Prime Video app for example took ages to be added, about 18 months.

Honestly, I have come to believe that the best outcome for consumers would be for Roku to directly launch and support their own boxes here, non-rebranded, with the same hardware as they use in the USA. Eliminating Telstra and having Roku support our market with their existing hardware would solve all 3 of the above issues - there would be no conflict of interest, they do have the technical expertise, and by using identical hardware we should get access to the really good ecosystem of apps that they Roku boxes have in the USA.

Needed one but I dont have even points to buy. I am in first tier and only couple of thousands points left. if anyone dont want and willing to giveaway please consider me. thank you.

    • Name does not check out.

      • Not sure whats wrong in asking? if i received a voucher or coupon code if not using will pass it on for some one to use. if someone not required and unable to use it why not.

  • +1

@OP Can you explain what Testra Gold is and how you get it in the post?
I don't see how you could hit that without bundling Internet/paying for Family plans
Gold Tier - $3000 and above annual eligible account spend per membership year
Nevertheless a great deal for the people whom qualify

    • +3

From the Telstra Plus Website, Gold Tier : "For customers who have an overall annual eligible spend of $3,000 or more"

      • +4

Yup I found that right now I'm sitting in regular, just a poor peasant pay only $59 a month

        • +1

you can add on a whole bunch of stuff - foxtel, netflix etc, all in one bill and you pay this anyway

          • -2

@botchie: Yeah i find that hard to believe. On Aussie Broadband. The family entertainment NBN plan is $109 per month with a free Fetch mini and the basic entertainment plan. Add another $20 on top and you get the Ultimate entertainment plan. That's $129 total per month. And what is Netflix about $14 right?. How can it be $3000 per year.

            • +1

@hollykryten: not just netflix :) , just add things on, internet, 2 X mobile phone, netflix, foxtel, x box….adds up…but yes agree - $3k a year is still hard to get to

      • -3

If you're paying $3,000 per year then Telstra has already got their money back for this free Telstra TV through profits obtained from their over priced services. Trust me, Telstra is not losing any money.

        • +3

I still find Telstra the best in terms of service out there - im not even a silver member through but Im happy with what I pay them for

          • -4

@botchie: I beg to differ. I've had much better service through ABB then i ever had through Telstra. At least ABB had an Australian call centre the whole time during COVID while Telstra had no service at all due to the support offshoring at the time. So how did Telstra have good service when there basically was no call centre service for months on end. You couldn't call any body for help.

            • +1

@hollykryten: Is ABB a euphemism for something or just autocorrect from TPG or someone else? Never heard ABB was in telecom business providing Foxtel or mobile services.

              • @expertreader: Only Telstra as far as i know provides Foxtel. In my opinion it's over priced rubbish any how.

ABB provides entertainment channels some of the same sorts you get through Foxtel but through Fetch https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/nbn-plans/fetch/ as well as mobile phone plans through parts of the Telstra 4G network. https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/phone/mobile/

I'm not affiliated with ABB but only one of their NBN customers.

              • @expertreader: I have moved my house 3 times now, once went from Sydney to Adelaide….connected internet in a day, had telstra tech at my house next day with any issues, poor guy was here for an hr tracing my cables to the pit, ended up installing free amps so my cable would run smooth, now on nbn, no issues, have the smart modem and 4g kicks in when nbn is out
                I now pay $90 a month, 100/40 (after some negotiation) - wouldn't move even if I was paying $120

        • As an established company with shareholders, you'd hope Telstra is not losing any money lol

  • +1

Somehow not on a Tier. Oh well.

  • +1

    Worked. Thanks.

  • +1

    got 1..

also xbox series x controller for 29k points.. is that worth it?

  • +1

Dammit I got downgraded last week to silver…

    • +1

      Same!!

    • +1

Coming from someone with four of these sitting in various places around the house trust me! You aren't missing out on much.

      • +1

Are you selling your unused one? I will take one if you are selling.

        • Yeah Sure mate. I could hook you up. Send us a DM

  • +1

    ordered thanks

  • +1

    Thank you! Redeemed.

  • +1

    Thank you OP. Got one.

  • +1

    Thanks

  • +1

    Ordered, Thank you OP!

  • +1

Got one thanks - but can someone explain what the point of it is?

I've read through the features and it still doesn't seem to offer much

As an aggregator, it doesn't support my DisneyPlus, Prime Video or Crunchyroll subscriptions, and Chromecast / Google home already offers great voice control.

    • +2

      It has Binge
I love my Samsung TV but that's the one app it doesn't have

    • +2

I have an older telstra TV that was bundled with my internet a few years back, it offers some standard apps like Netflix, Stan, SBS on Demand, some childrens apps etc, but also has a focus on telstra apps like foxtel now, bigpond movies etc, since it's part of the telstra ecosystem.

    • +1

It does have Prime Video and did have Crunchyroll but have to check mine to see if it still does. Claimed features is that it also has a built in tuner so you don't have to switch inputs to get to free to air TV and has a search function to look up which service a certain show is on.

  • +1

Thanks OP, didnt need another one, but got another one

  • +1

Thanks, I use these with some of my older TVs so are handy. It's no Nvidia Shield TV but I like the price.

  • +1

    1;1;b; eh, OP?
