Is this dash cam really 4k?

I spotted this allegedly 4K Dash Cam at Kogan but noticed under specifications it says:
Camera
Lens Rotatable: 270º Horizontal, 180º Vertical
Sensor Front: OV4689 4-megapixel CMOS | Rear: 6H2 1-megapixel CMOS

Display
Display Size 1.5"
Screen Type TFT LCD
Video Resolution 3200 x 1800P 30FPS + 720P | 2560 x 1440P 30 FPS + 720P | 1920 x 1080P 60FPS + 720P | 1920 x 1080P 30FPS + 720P

I want to know if this is really 4K?
I thought 4K is 8 megapixels or 3840 x 2160 pixels?

The Mstar MSC8328Q processor in this camera is not true 4K. Rather the frame and resolution is interpolated and the same processor has been used in a lot of budget action cameras in the past.

    • A better question is, do you need real 4k for a dashcam? Does fake 4k look better than real 1080p. Or wahtever.

      • True 4K would certainly be a lot better, but I think even 1080p would be pretty average with this chipset.

4K or not… there's a lot more than just the resolution in a dashcam that's important.

    Video Resolution 3200 x 1800P 30FPS

    Nope. Not really, but kinda.

It kinda is, but video isn't usually referenced by megapixels like stills. Back to closer to what you were asking, 3840 x 2160 is the most common 4k standard that the general public will see, though (4x the pixels of 1080p), there are other standards like 4096 x 2160, 4096 x 1716 and 3886 x 2160 that you see in cinema. 4k has a number of official standards, and more unofficial standards. In the language of stills, it'll be in the area of 7 to 9mp.
