Inbuilt wardrobe ideas/options

Hi All

We have two kids bedrooms back to back with eachother – one has a built in wardrobe, the other has a "nook". We would love to turn this into an inbuilt wardrobe but understand most w/robes are 60cm deep and we only have 45cm to play with. We had thought about since making it 60cm but it would create a little step in the wall which may look a bit stupid? Any ideas?

Have a look at Ikea's Pax wardrobe range for ideas - there are a number of shallow design options.

    It won't look that stupid.

    • Actually, it might look weird/not even fit if the opposite wall where the window is located is also 45cm as it would cover the window slightly?

I should also say, the other option is to knock out the current wardrobe and redo them both at the same time -;this would give me 119cm total available space - not sure if this will be enough space, but I think it may be if I go with some ply or similar as the partition wall….

    • If money is no object then demo the common wall as you suggest and replace with a slim sheet eg melamine cupboard backboard.

The alternative with a full size cupboard resulting in a step out of the wall will look quite ok too!

      • Wouldn't you just get a custom built in?

        • In the vacant space? Certainly can, just didn't know how weird it will look having a step out

    • Definitely destroying the wardrobe and building the two wardrobes would be the ideal option. A 45cm wardrobe might be(come) useless.

Considering the other option, if the new wardrobe leaves the window free, the step on the right wouldn't be terrible. Not ideal, but certainly more functional than a 45cm wardrobe.

      • But the current wardrobe is ~49cm deep? (94 - 45).

Knocking down the wall would only result in two wardrobes of ~47cm deep…

        • You are right. I was considering the " 119cm total available" OP mentioned, but he/she will have to knock out the current wardrobe for that. Therefore, knocking out seems to be the best option.

  • Just take both out and split the difference, gyprock straight onto the back of each wardrobe.
