Optus Large Data Sim Plan: 150GB/Mo for $50/Mo for 36 Months (Reverts to 75GB/M Thereafter) @ Optus (New and Recontracting Only)

90

Was shopping for a decently priced data SIM when I found this deal going on on Optus.

150GB/mo for 50AUD/mo for the first 36 months but without a minimum term contract. In other words: double data, without contract lock-in.

While the cost per GB is not as cheap as the 500GB Optus One deal going on atm, the terms cover mobile broadband usage (unlike the voice plans that explicitly exclude those), which may be attractive to some (it is to me, as I don't want to run afoul with Optus' FUP).

It is one of their promotions since early this year. Personally, I think the 50G for $25 is much better. I just finished my 200G for $49 contract and switched to the 50G plan. Could barely use 20G each month before the Covid and now only less than 2G since we stay at home most of the time.

    • Oh, I haven't seen it added before, hence I posted here.

I am at the other end of the spectrum. My 4g is my main internet atm and for the last two or 3 months I have been running over a non-longer available 70GB / month plan with another provider.

I know from previous usage that I need around 100 GB, so even the 200GB / 65AUD home 4G is a waste of precious dollars (that I usually set aside on my savings account) and to make it worse comes with the modem that I don't need (I have a recently new router and an AC800S already).

      • BTW, before this 4G conundrum I used to have a 50AUD / 100GB NBN plan with Exetel but when I moved units, Exetel wanted to sell me a new plan, new connection fee, new everything. I still tried to find something competitive and without contract lock-ins but realised I would likely have better luck finding a Bunyip than a decent NBN plan below 50AUD.

The only one with a decent speed is Spintel's 100GB for 49.95AUD / month (200GB on 6 months contract).

So I gave the fixed line a two finger salute and got myself the 4G setup. Most of the time it works just fine.

OP may want to update the link to the Optus Shop page: https://www.optus.com.au/broadband-nbn/mobile-broadband/sim-…

Almost 2 years ago I got a deal for 200GB/month over 24 months and received a Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 in the process. It cost $10 more per month but considering it was 50GB extra, for only 24 months and with a tablet thrown in for good measure, I'd say this offering is rubbish.

tied to 36 months contract ?

edit : month to month , no contract

  • I have an Optus Huawei modem that I had when I was on a mobile broadband/ wireless plan - purchased the unit outright and had kept it for years.I had been moving from one apartment to another so it was very convenient to just buy the unit itself and eventually terminated the contract. I was thinking of getting a data sim plan this time - can I use this sim for this modem?

    — Just went online and spoke to one of the guys via the chat and I was told that the SIM can only be used for the iPads/watches? I told her I have a standalone router from optus which I had used for but she said No. Can anyone confirm please?

      From the CIS:

"These plans are for use with a tablet or mobile broadband device"

  • Is it possible to share the data with other options users and what is the minimum cost a sim card for calls and sharing this data for other users?

    • I believe it would be the choice small (39 AUD/mo for 10GB plan) but the website is particularly cryptic around this

      • Can confirm the Data Allowance extends between voice (I am on a 45AUD plan) and the Mobile Broadband as well.

So bundling would result on a sweat deal for those signing up to the 500GB / 69 mon deal as well. :-)

  • This is a DATA SIM only plan, so you can’t make any calls or send/receive text messages.
