From NSW to QLD High School year 12 student

I have a very difficult decision to moving from NSW regional town to Brisbane with year 12 student. She has already started year 12 and has done her pre HSC exam…. Someone has had this experience? How different is year 12 in NSW and QLD? Can someone give some advice for me?

Even if it was 100% the same, moving may be very stressful for some.

It depends on her aspirations. If she requires high scores to pursue her ambitions, you don't want to move her and risk it.

It's only one more year but to her, it may be a pivotal moment that affects the rest of her life.

  • Can you wait a year? Or can she live with a local family member for a year?

Edit - she's already started? So she is finishing in December? Can you wait just 1 month?

I think many schools in NSW started their year 12 curriculum in term 4 of year 11. It's getting quite competitive.

      • Still transferring half way through the HSC to another state could be hazardous

I think many schools in NSW started their year 12 curriculum in term 4 of year 11. It's getting quite competitive.

This has always been the case; I finished my schooling about 15 years ago and we started Year 12 in Term 4 Year 11 as Term 4 Year 12 is HSC exam time

        • Well I have no idea. I actually did my high school in Qld and then came to NSW for uni. Found that the curriculum for some of the subjects quite different, but that was decades ago though.

        • Yep it has always been the case but I know that this year, especially doing Covid that some private schools have been messing with their term dates/curriculum to do even more year 12 syllabus work in year 11.

Nothing to do with competitiveness. Year 11 is only 3 terms long so that Year 12 gets the full 4 terms.

    The school year is over

  • Would definitely suggest finishing off your exams in Qld.. I'm sure u could make the move and just organise a place to stay while the exams are going or some other arrangement, moving schools would be the last option IMO

Yes do not leave if nearly finished, a different state would have different rules, different classes and HSC NSW will be different to QLD so your child may be forced to redo year 11 & 12

I had this situation when I was at school (I was the child). I moved from NSW to QLD around October of year 11. Now this was 15+ years ago but I guess I can provide some insights.

When I changed schools I couldn't do the same subjects as one of the subjects my new school didn't even offer and there were others that I couldn't do because of timetable clashes (I had to pick between 2 of my elective subjects). The new school also placed me in the wrong math level class - they put me in the lower math class instead of the higher one.

This is without mentioning having to say goodbye to friends and leaving my part time job. I made new friends at the new school but it just wasn't the same.

    • Thanks for sharing this! We are still trying to find the way for my daughter to stay in NSW . But, if not, we must be prepared.

  • In QLD at least, year 11 & 12 are integrated. Both count towards OP. But I'm not familiar with their new system.

If you have no choice BUT to move then she moves with you if you can stay in the area she stays where she is. Not a hard decision at all. you're the adult she's a kid this must not upset the kids and their routines, friendships etc is all bs

Good experience at having plans change suddenly and learning to cope and deal with problems, there is too much of the every child gets a star so no one cries parenting these days
