eBay: Sell Your Phone or Console and Earn 10% Back as Coupon (Max $50)

320

May be targeted. Not a bad deal if you are looking to sell and upgrade your phone. Email also says "Pay no selling fees", but can't see anything about final value fees being waived in the terms and conditions.

T&Cs:
Simply sell your mobile phones or video game consoles for $20 or more to receive a coupon worth 10% of the final sale, up to a maximum of $50 per coupon. The offer ends on 24 Nov. *Valid on up to 10 listings. By clicking Accept Offer you agree to the terms and conditions and to receive further communications about the promotion. T&Cs apply.

Edit: Final Value Fee Still Applies. Discussion.

Op, add a link to the T&C's

The link was already on the post :)

      • Haha sorry didn't click the post link :D

"Unfortunately, this promotional offer is by invitation only."

  • Nice one, similar to Sell now & get 10% back to spend I had recently.

Recently sold 2 x mobile phones for over $500 each, 2 x $50 vouchers received.

Remember you can't stack with other vouchers, also can't use to buy gift cards.

  • "The regular fees for private sellers apply, other than the additional allowance for free insertion fees."

    • I haven't paid any selling fee on 2 x mobile sales I mentioned above.

      However, PayPal fee still apply.

  • Here's what it looks like under promotional offers on my selling page:

Sell your old Phone or Console free from selling fees*
Pay no selling fees on your sale & get 10% back as a voucher for a Phone or Console upgrade.

I feel like they got lazy and reused the terms and conditions from the last/similar promo (that ends today), but it seems weird for them to be willing to potentially make a loss, very un-eBay like.

posting on eBay through gumtree to avoid the insertion and final value fees are probably a better option than this… no vouchers, no category restrictions, open to all

  • +2

You're much better off waiting for a free listing (FVF) promo.

  • +4

But you still have to pay about 10% in final sale fees plus PayPal fees?

    • Yes
      10.9% to ebay
      2.6% to PayPal.

      • +1

I haven't paid any selling fee on 2 x mobile sales I mentioned above.

        However, PayPal fee still apply.

        • That makes the offeruch more appealing.

      • +2

yes can confirm Final value fee still applies

        • Thanks. I thought so. Unless they expressly state its free, they almost certainly bill you.

        • and your source is?

          • +1

@ozdesi: I chatted to 3 reps, and all confirmed final value fee applies. Unless it specify final value fee free. You will have to pay.

            • +2

@spc12go: They specify “selling fees” - doesn’t that imply both listing fees AND final value fees?

              • @proudwanderer: Apparently no. I even argue the fact that it doesn’t state they will charge final value fee. They told me it’s the other way around. If eBay charges FVF, the customer service agent may not help with the credit.

                • +1

@spc12go: I would argue that the word “selling” is more akin to FVF - why? Because the word “selling” implies you have sold the item.

In other words “selling fee” - implies fees associate with selling the item. You are charged FVF fee when you sell the item.

Listing? - You have not sold anything yet - hence it is not a “selling fee”. It is a “listing fee” or an “advertising fee”.

They don’t say free listing fee or free advertising fee right? They say free SELLING FEES - hence the fee charged when you sell the item - in other words the FVF

            • +1

              @spc12go: I wouldn't trust chat monkeys

    • Similar to this offer from eBay, you might be able to stack the offer with a "no final value fee" offer, so you end up "profiting" from the offer.

If you use this offer on it's own, then you might only be a small amount out of pocket as you pay the seller/PayPal fees, but you get a coupon to use for a future purchase.

      • PayPal fee always applies

  • "Pay no selling fees on your sale & get 10% back as a voucher".

No selling fees = no final value fees?

    • +2

They are talking about inserting fee which you normally get it for free anyway

      • +1

how can you tell? What makes you think final value fees is not part of selling fees?

one of the other sell promo says this in their wording:

Enjoy $0 Selling Fees on the first item you sell ($0 Insertion and Final Value Fees)

    • +4

      confirmed with live chat

      Niel13:05 PM
No selling fees which means no FVF

no fee and 10% credit oh yes

      • Great to know, still very limited categories but great for those who have a phone or console to sell.

        • Which categories is it limited to?

Does ebay do a check/validation on the category when you create the listing?

          • @proudwanderer: Phones and gaming consoles.

If they have done it right anything you list outside of these 2 categories won't register with the promo.

      • Live chat said the opposite when I asked them haha.

Mind posting a screenshot of the chat in case we have to contest?

      • I had sold an item to myself as a test and can confirm eBay chat people do shit about it. No credit back. I always confirm before selling to a customer on eBay that it is what they are saying. Lucky me i didnt sell to a customer. I just cancelled the order, and hence no fee applies, no credit applies.

Ebay is like so scamming customers on selling item almost as if we need to report them for false advertisement like how Vodafone and other telcos got sued for advertising "unlimited data" rather than "endless data".

I believe similar action should be taken against ebay too.

    • I haven't paid any selling fee on 2 x mobile sales I mentioned above.

      However, PayPal fee still apply.

      • That was for a different promotion though right? - and not the same one as the one in this post (which is just starting today)

        • +1

Terms are identical though. The offer i used when I click terms it directs me to the same terms of the new offer.

  • I actually got the 10% coupon selling a used book and furniture. So may not be restricted on only phones/consoles.

    • That was a different promotion that expired on 5-Nov - where you get 10% coupon for selling anything.

This one seems to be just phones and consoles

  • So the 10% voucher can be used on anything and not a phone/console upgrade? And there's definitely no FVF charged?

  • I sold a phone today and was charged a FVF

  • Hi so what’s the story with the FVF o those promos?

    • It is charged. Only the listing fee is free

  • wow, such dodgy wording…

  • I was charged a FVF.

    • i contacted via chat and got the FVF waived.

      • Did the same yesterday and they were dodgy af. Stating something about a system glitch and wanted to push responsibility over to us sellers. I'll never use eBay on a normal non-promo day.

        • Can you clarify what happened. Were they saying that charging the FVF was a glitch and that it should NOT have been charged?

  • I got this for selling a phone but it seems the coupon can only be used in certain categories?
It is mystery which categories as the T & C link that came with the coupon is dead

      • I read that as video games & phone are the categories valid to sell in to receive the coupon, but where the coupon can be spent, it does not say

        • Sorry - I miss-read your question. The coupon can be spent on almost anything - but the item needs to cost more than the coupon value for max value (no partial redemptions).

          • @JohnSy: Thanks I will try it out later today

            • +1

@King Tightarse: I just tried it - originally I thought the coupon can be spent on almost anything - it seems this is not the case. It does pop up for use on items in the phone and video games category. Plus other random items - but not every item so I am not sure.

              • @JohnSy: Yes, eBay and their mysterious ways.
I have noticed that their coding is just a huge mess these days. So many mistakes, half baked promotions, dead links etc

    • i only noticed this also once i went to use the coupon - silly really…the wording and finding the t&c's has been brutal.
EDIT - actually, if you look through the last part of those T7c's i cant see ANYWHERE where it says the coupon has to be used in that category - only thing it says is that it cant be used in "Each coupon cannot be used on items in the ‘Property’, ‘Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles’ and ‘Coins, Banknotes & Bullion’ categories. However, items listed in the ‘Vehicle Parts & Accessories‘ category are included."
      Worth following up?

      • FYI - i contacted ebay chat and they claim they are escalating it and will rectify the issue with the coupon…..we shall see

      • I think the emails have been clear enough with the keyword for the promo being "upgrade". However, no chance of getting fair price on a new PS5 or Xbox to use it on.

The original email mentions upgrade: "sell your old phone & save on the upgrade* Pay no selling fees on your sale & get 10% back as a voucher for a phone upgrade."

The coupon email mentions upgrade too: "Save on a console or phone upgrade"

Search link if helps (filters: Australia only, Buy Now, low to high $), as people always listing things in the wrong categories anyway, so maybe can find something useless to use it on.

        Video Game Consoles:
        https://www.ebay.com.au/b/Video-Game-Consoles/139971/bn_5041…
        Mobile Phones:
        https://www.ebay.com.au/b/Mobile-Phones/9355/bn_504059?LH_BI…

Edit: Actually I take that back - just used my voucher on item that is not part of consoles or phones to my surprise. But if your voucher restrictive, still may be worth a look at the two categories.

        • Which category was your purchase from?
EDIT - i think it may now have been fixed!!

          • @JuryWheel: Definitely seems to be fixed now, my vouchers are unrestricted (except gift cards) now.

            • @doweyy: only annoying this now is that its single use per purchase….

  • +1

In the ebay help article Selling fees without an eBay Store it says:

"We charge two main types of selling fees: an insertion fee when you create a listing, and a final value fee when your item is sold."

So FVF's should not be charged.

  • Has anyone used their voucher(S) yet? They are only available to be used in a couple of categories - i have complained to ebay but they are taking ages to get back to me!

  • Got a coupon from selling a phone. Cannot use the coupon anywhere. Everything I tried was "coupon does not applied to some items".

  • So this ended yesterday but I sold my phone today - no voucher, fair enough but it charged me full FVFs $41.93!!!!
I listed during the promo but did not expect it to revert to full fees once the voucher period was over as the listings are automatically 30 days
    Very dodgy eBay

  • After my phone was sold, I contacted eBay online agent to request waiver on the final value fee. After a week, I got part of the final value fee back (90%)..
The voucher seems to work in many categories for me. They might have fixed the issue already.

    • Was it just in online chat? I have found them absolutely useless to deal with with this sort of stuff! What did you say to them? Just that the promo said no selling fees?
