Hi Guys,
Looking for an engagement present and was thinking of a 5.1 channel surround system, any deals that anyone knows of? or could provide input on good quality, what to avoid etc. Any help much appreciated! Preferably around the $250 mark.
Cheers

we're not talking state of the art here, e.g panasonic do some for between $200 - $300, so they are out there, the samsung one i have has lasted 5 years and was in the price range. I know i can get one in there im just looking for suggestions on what is in that range, not what isnt.
There is a vast chasm between each of our definitions of "good quality" then.
Seriously, you will find an old (ie >5 years) half decent amp and set of proper speakers for around $250 secondhand and that kit will blow your glorified computer speakers away in every respect, sound quality, volume and length of service.k, well lets agree that our definitions of "good quality" will not match. This is the sort of thing im thinking of:

Thanks for the tips
If you can increase your budget a little bit to $350, you could pick up the Logitech z-5500's.

I know it's a slighty unorthodox choice, but it will be a lot better quality than anything on par that is under the acutal "home theatre" category.
Tip 1 - double, triple or quadruple your budget (if you're thinking new)
Tip 2 - if you think you'll get "good quality" for $250, you're dreaming (if you're thinking new)
Tip 3 - look in the Trading Post and on eBay for secondhand gear.
