Google Store International Transaction Fees & PayPal

I'm considering making a purchase from the Google Store. I've heard that, since they're based in Singapore, using my normal debit card will add an extra 3% in international transaction fees. However the Google Store does have a PayPal option, and according to their PDS I won't be charged anything if no currency conversion is involved.

Can anyone confirm that using PayPal won't incur extra fees?

Thanks

  • I think the fee is for the seller, not you.

  • I've not experienced any conversion fees from Google Store before?

Bought phones, home minis and most recently the new chromecast + Netflix.

    • Which credit card did you use?

      • A variety of cards over the years (eg HSBC, Coles), all Australian.

I read about it most recently here on Whirlpool. Maybe those people didn't correctly choose Australia as their region before checking out?

    • I remembered back in the days of nexus 5, I needed to use 28 Degrees cc to avoid the international transaction fees.

PayPal won't charge you the international transaction fee. But your bank may charge you.

  • Google charges your credit card in AUD but processes the transaction overseas so some banks will charge an international processing fee even though no currency conversion is involved.

I'm pretty sure paypal will process the transaction in Australia assuming you have an Australian paypal account so you should avoid the fee if your bank or credit card provider charges one.
