Buying Computer Part Later Found out to Be Stolen/Fraud

Hi everyone,

I bought a computer part for a $1000 back in January 2018 which retailed for $1300.

Bought it from a guy on Facebook and he said that his friend works at the store X who can get discount.

Deal was legitimate to me because
- Other Facebook group members confirmed the seller is legit
- I received a receipt from Store X with tax invoice, customer ID, my name on it.
- I received screenshots of the online account showing purchase made from Store X
- Received tracking info and the goods were delivered by Startrack

I have text messages, Facebook messages, receipts pictures that shows what I bought.

I sold my entire PC later to Person Z and moved to another state. Person Z contacted me in August 2020 (over 2.5 years later) that he needs to claim warranty. I contacted the original seller about warranty claim and he did not respond.
I personally contacted Store X to claim warranty and the Store X asked person Z to send the item to them.

Store X came back saying that the item is considered stolen good because there was a charge back and hence they have the right to keep the part. Sore X also filed a police complaint.

I am waiting for the police to contact person Z.

Is there anything else I should be doing?

Has anyone experienced something like this?

Thanks.

Nothing else you could have done, besides contacting the manufacturer and getting them to run the serial at time of purchase.

    What pc part was it?

    • thanks mate; a display card. It was received brand new and sealed from the store hence no point in running the serial number.

      • How long is the actual manufacture warranty?

        • 3 years mate

How did you pay for it? PayPal/Bank Deposit/Cash…

$300 off does sound too good to be true.

Store should be looking at their staff and insurance policy.

$300 off a $1300 item I wouldn’t think was sus. If it was $500, then I would be thinking wtf

    • Paid in cash.
What I don't understand is that the receipts are from the store

Well, charged back against someones Credit Card…

If the receipt is to you and you didn't do the charge back, it seems like the computer shop's issue in allowing a charge back to someone who wasn't the buyer.

        • Yep, the receipt clearly shows my details but I was not even informed. And no complaint/fraud was lodged 2.5 years back.

          • @xiaxk: Also how do you know that your buyer sent them was the same computer/part to the shop?

And how do you charge back a cash sale?

Maybe the dodgy sales person voided the sale after printing the receipt to keep the cash. However that should not have voided the sale to you I would argue to the police you bought it fair and square from the store and they had no right to cancel the warranty on the part (their issue is with their employee not you).

          • @thatonethere: mate, i paid cash to the seller who ordered online using credit/debit card; this card was chargedback.

he said he has the card in hand, so i bought it from him. next thing i know, even the receipt is under my name; he said his friend works at the store that's why he placed another card on order and this card was shipped from the store to my home directly. when i received the card, the seller visited me and i paid him.

            • @xiaxk: Ah ok. Probably screwed then as the transaction was the card… soz

Why even answer someone 2.5 years later?

  • Is there anything else I should be doing?

It might not make a difference given it was years ago/the person probably used a fake name, but I would name and shame them, especially in the original Facebook group.

Did the police take your statement? Have you reported to the police, technically you are also a victim of this?

    • We have the original seller's contact number which he still uses. The police has not reached my seller as of yet.
I called the police and they say 'don't stress' and let the police reach your seller first.

I have not contacted the seller yet until we hear from the police.

  • Is the item even in warranty 2.5 years later?

    • Lot of graphics cards have 3 year warranty
