WFH and Gaming Desk Setup

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to upgrade my current WFH and personal computer desk setup to accomodate my ergonimic needs. I'm currently using MICKE desk from Ikea which gets quite cramped when I have to setup my laptop to use it with my monitor.

I'm hoping to build a 'clean desk' setup where there's minimal wiring and goes with the aestethic sense of the lounge room. I've watched quite a lot of youtube videos to get a bit of an idea but the more I watch, the more confused I get.

From my research, this is what I'm interested in buying so far:

  • A stand/sit Ikea desk: SKARSTA - seems stirdy, quite big (not something I would say about a certain body part of mine.
  • Ikea SIGNUM for cable management
  • Ikea FIXA also for cable management
  • UGREEN USB 3.0 sharing switch to switch my mouse between the desktop and the laptop.

I'm current using:
* AOC C24G1 monitor
* Cooler Master MasterBox Lite 3.1 MicroATX Mid Tower Case for my gaming computer
* My current gaming desktop setup from pcpartspicker should anyone be interested.

  1. I'm interested to know what are your thoughts on this and what us Ozbargainers have as a good WFH/Gaming setup with a large desk.
  2. Anything that someone would recommend buying / not buying.
  3. I'm also looking for good USB C hub as my work laptop Lenovo 7th X1 Carbon has thunderbolt port - any recommendations?
  4. I also experience migraines which my osteo tells me is because of my neck. I need to make the setup as ergonomic as possible. Would take recommendations for a good chair.
  5. The IKEA stand/sit desk above doesn't come with a drawer, so potentially need to buy a drawer as well.
  6. For this setup, we have to keep in mind that our basic instinct of hunt for a deal is in place - so have to stay in a budget

Would appreciate any help I could get. On a side note, could also use some tips on how to deal with migraines and if someone has tried anything that works. My work requires me to work infront of a computer for 8-10 hours everyday.

TL;DR: Need a good WFH/Gaming large desk setup with minimal clutter.

  • if you're on budget with a gaming chair. I went with the AKRACING K7 - $329 free shipping and the chair is comfortable but you have to know your size and shape.

if you want to spend a little bit more money the top gaming chair would be secret lab chairs theres some good design.
secret lab chairs are the highest amongst rating on gaming chairs and reviewed but at a premimum price.

I would vote you do not get the SKARSTA desk, get the other motorized one from Ikea. The reason being you WILL get lazy and not use it as often as you should because of the manual work. It looks easy enough now but you will not take it up and down empty.

A good chair / desk will outlive your PC by a lot.

There are no gaming chairs, there are chairs, good chairs and bad chairs…. gaming chairs are just overpriced chairs that are usually bad. Get a good chair. Try changing your position when sitting in the chair etc. Just get a good ergonomic chair, probably the best way to try them is just to go in the store and make yourself comfortable.

[After shitting on gaming chairs recommends one anyway] if you need more support for your neck there are these contraptions: https://imperatorworks.com/ there are a few models that do not look completely stupid. They allow you to recline your chair back and tilting your monitor up, and you can probably rest your head like that. These are not for a living room.

If you need living room ideas just check out some of these: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=randomfrankp+cl… most of the guys have a lot of money to throw around on their setups but you can still steal some ideas from them.

  • I have several colleagues who have the SKARSTA and they love it. They find it easy to move up and down. One of them does it mid way through the day but another is up and down every hour or so.

  • Omni desk. Had mine for 1 year now its great. If like last year should go on same for black friday.
