Best 4k TV for under $1000 for PS5?

I'm looking at purchasing a ps5 when they are avaliable and am needing to upgrade my 12 year old Plasma before then.

Does anyone have any recomendations on a decent 4k tv under $1000 that should pair well with the PS5?

I'm not super invested in smart features as i already have a chromecast
Thanks

Kogan 65" 4k dumb TV would do as long as you are happy with 4k/60fps gaming. Colour and contrast of course will be inferior to high end OLED screens but if you haven't spent a rather long time staring at one, you probably won't think the Kogan looks shit.

    What size?

You might be able to find a couple 55" 4k120hz sets for under $1000 over the next month or 2 during sales.

If that sounds good, I would have recommended the Sony x9000h but apparently, it has blur issues so the other 2 cheapest that support 4k120hz are the Samsung Q70t(VA panel, no local dimming) or the LG Nano86(IPS panel, pathetic local dimming but can be disabled). If FALR(Full Array Local Dimming) is important to you, the Samsung Q80t or higher would be what you're looking for. Regardless, local dimming is often pretty bad in game mode, especially at 120hz.

If you're willing to stretch to around $1500, you might be able to find the LG BX OLED at that price which has 4k120hz. All that said, I wouldn't personally know how well any of them perform at 120hz(so do your own research) but the OLED ought to give you the best visual quality & performance & has a great reputation(though burn-in remains an issue but that's mostly if you watch at peak brightness with the same static bright images all the time otherwise it should takes years before you notice anything but it is cumulative so they have a more limited lifespan but you ought to know how to take care of it, going from a Plasma).

If 120hz isn't important to you at all, or you want a 65" or above, then you're probably best off looking at a TCL or Hisense, & try to find their input lag if possible. I WOULDN'T recommend most Kogan, FFALCON, Soniq or miscellaneous bargain brands for gaming as their response times are usually bad & input lag even worst. You do notice these things even if it's not obvious at first & that can make a big difference, especially in fast paced games like shooters.

Rtings.com is a good place to start for internationally available TVs, like the BX OLED, or the LG Nano86(which is listed as the 85 there but differences are minimal), TCL however sell completely different TVs for different regions so Rtings is no help with them. After that, there's several YouTube reviewers you can find that go into details that Rtings gloss over, like the Sony X9000h blur issue at 120hz.

  • It's hard to work out what have the best gaming performance because a lot of the cheaper brands are not comprehensively reviewed on Rtings.com or the like.

Probably a TCL P715 - but again I don't think there is a lot of information out there about how this performs with HDR gaming.

You could wait for Sony X8000H to come on sale. That is basically Sony's current basic 4K TV but being a Sony you get pretty good image quality on their low end stuff.

    • They are reviewed on rtings but TCL rename their TVs and make large adjustments for models depending on region.
So yeah rtings is no good for TCL
Then other models have region specific model names and it's always a headache to work out what the US model names for TVs are

The main contenders at this low to mid price range have a lot of issues

    Samsung 2020 qleds (q70t/q80t)
Game mode extreme picture quality reduction

    Sony x9000h
    Blur at 4k/120hz

    Hisense 2020 uled q8
    Doesn't have HDMI 2.1 features

    Pretty annoying.
Went down a rabbit hole of research till 3am last night just to go to bed confused and dissapointed.

I was all in on the x9000h until I heard about the blur issues. Frustrating isn’t it! Still haven’t bought a TV yet and I thought I had found the perfect one.

  • i have a 15 year old plasma from Pioneer, and recently bought the $999 65 inch UHD LED tv from kogan in anticipation for PS5, i already have a kogan 43 inch and honestly it doesnt look THAT much different from a higher end one, the only people who notice that are people who bother to care about small differences in backlight and bleed, or people that want a higher refresh rate or better response time,i just saw a sony tv selling for $500 more, and it has the exact same response time as this Kogan one, dont get caught in the hype of the response times and refresh rates, unless your a comnpetitive gamer or something they dont matter nearly as much for the average person when you get to the 10 ms or so range, pay attention to the panel manfacturer, the panel manufacturer for this particular TV they have on sale at Kogan at the moment is SHARP. (Btw i also use a Kogan TV to connect to my gaming PC and ive never noticed annoying lag or anything of the sort, for the price you pay its comfortable enough for 85-90% of people)

SHARP actually manufacture panels for brands like samsung and LG so honestly your getting a great quality panel for a cheap price, at the end of the day all these companies use similar panels, as long as you dont care about refresh rates higher than 60hz at 4k, i would recommend the 65 inch from kogan, the $999 one too because that uses the SHARP panels, their $899 model uses a different and less known panel manufacturer, also the TV has Dolby sound and HDR included with it, so not too shabby when you add up the cost compared to the size and features

    • May as well go big W or Aldi same crap
