MSI X470 Gaming Plus Max AMD Motherboard - $139 Delivered @ Centrecom

1020

Further price drop on this motherboard.

Supposedly compatible with Zen3 with a Bios update (due in Jan 2021), but if you are planning to get Zen3 when it launches next week, go with B550/X570 (which will also need a Bios update, but I believe most are ready to be downloaded - please correct me if I'm wrong).

  • This will work with new Ryzen 5000? PCI gen 3?

    • +1

Yeah supposedly, but have to wait till Jan 2021 for bios update.

    • +2

I think you need a 3000 series to update the bios though…

      • -3

That doesn't make sense. You might need a cpu to be able to post and update bios, but it shouldnt matter what series so long as its supported by the mobo.

        • +11

This generally isn't true. If you pop in a CPU which the current UEFI/BIOS on the board doesn't support, it won't be able to boot (meaning you can't flash to a UEFI/BIOS which does support that CPU unless your motherboard has a CPU-less UEFI/BIOS update feature). Whatever UEFI/BIOS is on the board right now may not support a 5000 series CPU.

It's why AMD offers boot kits as a last resort to allow you to update your UEFI/BIOS to support a newer CPU: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/pa-100

@MHLoppy: I have this board in the B450 model and it has a USB port for flashing bios updates.

            • @aussieprepper: Do u need a cpu in the socket for this to work like a 2000 or 3000 series

              • +3

@ColdFusion: From MSI website B450 model.

"Flash BIOS Button: Simply use a USB key to flash any BIOS within seconds, without installing a CPU, memory or graphics card"

The X470 board doesn't say this in the specs sheet on MSI website. So i am not sure if it has this feature.

          • @MHLoppy: This was my understanding I just wanted verification. Thankyou!

          • +1

@MHLoppy: @MHLoppy yeah I meant it doesn't need to be a 3000 series specifically, just something the mobo supports at present.

          • @MHLoppy: Didn't see he had replied

  • As per mentioned there will be a BIOS update coming early jan 2021 to enable ryzen 5000 series cpus. As for the pcie3.0 question, yes, the x470 supports 3.0. if you want pcie 4.0 youre going to need a B550/X570 board

  • +4

This is a great deal. Absolutely destroys all B450 boards around the same price for quality. Also with Ryzen 5000 likely to be the last gen on AM4, once it gets the Jan 2021 BIOS update it will have the same future processor support as X570/B550.

The only reasons not to get this would be if you want to use a Ryzen 5000 CPU before Jan 2021, if you need PCIe gen 4 (very few actually do now), or if you plan on overclocking a Ryzen 9 CPU. In all these cases you'd be looking at spending a lot more to step up to a good 500 series board.

    • +1

Like a lot of the MSI 400 series AMD lineup, there is a lack of ARGB (3pin) headers on the board, which is something to consider if you have any ARGB fans or strips.

      • +1

That's fair, never used one myself so never noticed that its not there lol

    • Had a hard time finding any boards that had Type C front until I looked around the x570. Idk if it was necessary but my case has one and it kinda seemed dumb not to use it.

      • +1

This board actually has 2 internal USB 3 headers, so you could use an adapter to turn one of them into a Type-C header!

        • Already got a x570 tomahawk… Planning to see how good the 5000 series is, else i'll return this and buy a 10850k instead.

  • +2

im running this board, paid $200 6 months or so ago. great deal if you dont want to jump into the next series just yet

  • I would have jumped on this one, but was impatient and bought Tomahawk Max a week ago for $50 more :S Feels bad

    Definitely pays to wait sometimes!

  • +1

Planning on building a PC over the next few months - thinking the Ryzen 7 3700X and a 3080, but I'm still a bit in the dark on MB's. Will this be suitable?

    • Yeah, this will work, and its a good board for a good price. But unless you wanted to start buying parts immediately you could wait a few weeks to see what happens with AMD releasing new cpu's and gpu's soon. Probably there will be many changes in the prices of motherboards, cpu's and gpu's over the next few months.

      • Thanks. Am planning to wait for the new Ryzen CPUs for a price drop on the 3700X, but wasn't sure whether this was too good to pass up.

  • +1

On my PC part picker I'm getting the error: Note:The motherboard M.2 slot #2 shares bandwidth with a SATA 6.0 Gb/s port. When the M.2 slot is populated, one SATA 6.0 Gb/s port is disabled. Its my first time building so I don't know much about what this means?

    • +2

If you use M.2 slot, one of the SATA port will be disabled. You have to check the manufacturer guide and see which sata port will be disabled.

    • +1

If you planning on using multi HDD?

For you old school Disk or SSD, they use a SATA port.

m.2 is the new style HDD, one that looks like a large USB stick.

      You can use 1 x M.2 + SATA HDD or 2 x M.2

  • +1

This or the Asrock B550 Pro4.

    Ryzen 3600
    Gen3 M.2

    • +1

I'd go B550 but with a 3600 you get a shot at upgrading the bios if u want to upgrade to 5000 series.

  • definitely buying this because it has max in the name

    • +1

If you like the name max I can introduce you to some dudes..

  • Thanks a lot. Don't need one but bought one anyway. Sigh.

  • Ok, so if you are going to buy a 5000 series cpu then no "Smart Memory Access" apparently if you also want to get the 6000 series GPU from AMD.

I guess 400 series chipset prices will fall further.

  • Looking to upgrade to 3900x will this be suitable mobo? Or should I get a x570

    • +1

If I could afford a 3900x with hardware to match, I'd definitely be pairing it with a x570. x570 Tomahawk seems to be a popular choice and was selling around $300 during Prime day, so assume it will be around that price for Black Friday sales. x570 Aorus Elite was like $230-240 also during that time.

  • I wish I waited…1 week from buying and building with a B450….for $20 less…live and learned.

Reviews look pretty good on this board and far out value for money A+

  • I got this for my 3800x and works perfectly. I thought it was a bargain at $189

  • I foolishly checked out as a guest. I should have made an account…

I havent used centrecom for quite a few years. I understand they prob have a lot of orders to process being a sale & covid.

Roughly how long does it take them to email an order confirmation? I paid by paypal

  • Price has gone up to $169 - seems the sale is over early?
