UK regulator Ofcom has banned network locked phones

I'm not very familiar with UK politics/affairs, but this seems a bit surprising considering both the current chair and CEO were appointed during conservative governments. Normally conservatives would prefer tacit encouragement through consumer education and market forces rather than bringing the hammer down and outright banning it.

I hope Rod Sims is paying attention.

  • User name checks out.

    Conservatives always hate people

The trick in the UK was to buy it from Carphone Warehouse (part of Curry's PC world now) they had all the networks and stock phones.

Even thought it might say locked the phone was always unlocked. You can't have a line for each model for each network.

    • You mean like we do here with three different networks selling locked prepaid phones?

      • Nope. They stock one phone for all networks. If you ordered from networks direct they are locked.

A ban on locked phones is a win for users.

  • The price of a locked phone is subsidized but the network costs. All it will lead to is paying more upfront costs.
That is why you can get these ridiculously cheap phones that are sold under cost at the supermarkets.
If you buy these phones and keep for a year until you get a free unlock you are actually coming out ahead, although it is not practical.

If you buy a locked phone on a plan you are typically losing anyway since they have absurd plan fees.
These days you can get unlimited calls + text + 5GB data for $15 a month. And if you don't need that much data you can pay as low as $10. you will always come out in front just buying the handset yourself and signing up to these super great value plans.

  • Just having the very painful experience of getting 2 phones unlocked (both after 6 months)
    (Samsung A30)

Optus has progressed to TIO and now Optus Aussie resolutions.

Telstra will be next to TIO
    Stuffed around for weeks.
    ( paid the $25)

Would have just unlocked online for $5 or so thru the ozbargain preferred unlockers but have no Personal PC to achieve said deals ;)
