How Are Freelance Photographers Coping up with Finances?

I always wanted to quit my job and get feel good about what I wanted to do but how doesn't like some fixed money coming in to your bank? I still want to get into the scene and offer really good service even free first few photoshoots to make my portfolio look alright. anyway, are there any freelance or photographers or (people from relevent industries) who work as sole-traders who can tell me if its a good time to quit the 9 to 5 security job and do photography. are people getting any financial or income support from the govt? I am in vic.

…who can tell me if its a good time to quit the 9 to 5 security job and do photography.

What exactly would you be taking pictures of if you get in now? I'd at least wait until this whole covid thing is well and truly over and confident that everything is back to normal before even thinking about it.

On a normal day, you'd be competing with all the other seasoned photographers. At a time like this when there's minimal weddings and other events, the competition is going to make things much worse.

My understanding is that you would have had to already have an established business (i.e. with turnover etc.) before you could get any COVID-related government support.
Otherwise we would all be starting up new businesses.

      With declared income.

If you’re willing to do some work for free, then start offering your photography services as a side hustle in your spare time.

If you do well then start charging for your services and when your income from the side hustle is enough to replace a significant percentage of your day job (enough to live off), then do it.

Never quit your day job for some bright idea of how you could earn a living without testing the waters first. It’s not worth the stress and you’ll most likely go backwards.
