Cheapest Ways to Have International Roaming?

Going abroad next year. Need to make sure the number can roam overseas, in case any matters back home looking for me or need to verify my identity.

    Aldi $5 sim

    • I should note I meant this as a means to receive security texts while abroad - not to be using the allowance on a daily basis.

  • Vodafone $5/day roaming had been great for me with no data limits unlike Telstra's meagre 200mb which itself is a joke in 2020

    • $5 a day? Thats insanely expensive for my intended use. I will be there for a few months.

      • There's no cheaper international roaming. If you're staying there for months, you should just get a SIM from there - can use a dual SIM phone.

        • I need my (04) aussie number working over there, not that i need a sim over there

@ISO9002: just came back from overseas, got stuck for 7 months in SE Asia, I am with vodafone and if you just need to receive otp codes from banks, you won't be charged the $5 a day. It is only charged if you make/accept a voice call, activate data or you send SMS. If you are just receiving sms, you just need to pay your usual monthly charges here in AU.

      • The $5 will be actived when making or receiving phone call, text or data, on the day. No using, no charge.
So turn off the data, and get a local sim for need.

$5 NOT charged when receiving a text.

Where are you heading to? For my travels I have generally purchased a SIM card for my destination and used that.

    • Few southeast asian countries, so i need (04) aussie number be connected over there, in case someone here calling me

  • I need international roaming so i can use my (04) aussie number over there

What I've done is to use Telstra PAYG roaming - but I don't use calls and disable data (just SMS for security stuff - and picked an eSIM service to have for voice/data). You can't leave a messagebank to tell people to ring your alternative number as that costs roaming $ - so you need to turn that off.

If you are willing to be fine grained, you can turn the roaming feature on/off to get your SMS (while it is off as far as I could tell no charges).

Why do you need your Australia number overseas?

Most banks will send verification codes to international numbers also….

    • I asked both ANZ and HSBC both wont do it

      • I was able to do it with NAB.

Can you just update it via internet banking?
Otherwise ask the bank to disable the SMS security feature - surely they cannot legally enforce it on you.

      • Maybe try the $59 month to month plan from optus? Includes roa ing and 2 g data overseas

Already got the travel exemption ?

    • Planning in the works. Love to have everything detailly planned, then the time comes, execution is easier

If you have a dual SIM iPhone, you could get the non-roaming but VoLTE/VoWiFI enabled Aussie line to work off the mobile data of a local (overseas) SIM.

    • Really?! Hows that done? Sometimes they also require sms for login or two-factor authentication, hows that accomplished?

      • I’ve done it in the past in Fiji. Have a look at Reddit for posts on this. Now all three Aussie networks support SMS over WiFi as well (Telstra didn’t earlier). The phone will use the mobile data connection of one the active sim (local) to do a sort of VoLTE on the Aussie sim.

  • Most post-paid plans offer international roaming.

The cheapest post paid plan would be TPG's $1/month PAYG

Presumably you're not actually going to use it as your main number when O/S, just to receive verification sms's (free to receive) and emergency calls (expensive to receive, but hey, it's an emergency)

    • Just checked with amaysim prepaid, minimum spend $10, you get $10 credit, no monthly charges, free sim.

that you can stay in touch with family, friends and colleagues. Just be aware that while it’s easy to connect, charges for international roaming are higher so make sure you review our roaming service charges.
