Looking for a Weedkiller to Remove Grass and Other Plants from Some Areas

I searched for few products and found that they have nutrients in them that will make grass grow!

I am looking for a product that will keep few areas totally plant free. I know roundup can do it but is there any cheaper option.

Roundup is basically agent orange

PS: I ordered pool salt (25KG) from bunnings.

  • Just roundup.

Easiest way is a layer of newspaper covered with mulch such as Pine bark.

Cheapest is a strong mixture of salt and water. It will sterilise the area.

Most fun way is a Propane Torch Weed Burner.

keep in mind roundup is a brand, "any" 360g/litre glyphosate should deal with grass. I normally get a 1 litre bottle at Mitre10 for $10, although the last bottle I got was Brunnings brand from Drakes supermarket for $10. Don't get it on you though.
Requires mixing with water, I use the measuring cup from an old laundry liquid bottle

    Make your own
Vinegar and salt with a bit of detergent. Read it online and I've been using it since. Works like a charm.

    • Is that vinegar salt mixture a weed killer, or grass killer, or both?

      • It kills everything.
2L vinegar, cup of salt, tablespoon dishwash. Works within hours in full sun areas

      • I kills everything unfortunately. Its the cheaper method though. No name/home brand from Coles or woolies. Get a decent spray bottle so you can target the weed. Its the acetic acid in vinegar that does the trick, combine with salt and you got a good combo that drieds out the weed. Detergent helps the the breakdown. You can also get higher concentrated acetic acid from garden stores

You can use steam and/or boiling water to kill weeds - but its a bit of a pain if you want to cover a large area.

  • a lot of pool salt works for us

    • I will use this method.

Depends what kind of weed you want to kill. Bear in mind Roundup may remain residual in soil after application therefore may impact surrounding grass/plants. If you are looking to kill broadleaf weeds than get broadleaf weed-killer such as from Yates or Hortico from Bunnos or Hardware store.

can you please post a sauce for "Roundup may remain residual in soil after application" as far as I'm aware it is non residual which is one of the reasons farmers use it so often

      • Source, but yeah, I'd like to see that too.
It will hurt any accreditation as 'organic' but it isn't meant to be residual.

        • Hence the use of word "may" and impact surrounding plants/grass. If you wish to torch everything then go for roundup. If you wish to kill only weed and not the grass then you need to choose the selective weedkiller.

If you don't give a toss about the enviro or smell, diesel does the trick. Learnt that from an old paving guy. Careful though that stuff is slippery if you get it on your pavers!

  • glyphosate 360 from bunnings or other hardware costs about $10.00 per 1 litre bottle mix at 10ml per litre in a spray bottle to kill most grass and weeds cost 10 cents per mixed litre probably the cheapest weed killer you will find, you can increase the amount of Glyphosate per litre (roundup is equivalent to 20 ml/litre)

Roundup is not Agent Orange. Roundup is Glyphosate.
Agent Orange is 2,4-5T a phenoxy herbicide which was used to kill blackberries in pasture land
The use of pool salt or other sodium chloride sources on soil will completely sterilise it. This causes permanent damage to the soil.
