Go Pro Hero 8 Black - Motorcycle or Helmet Mount

Hi All,

Hope you are well.

I recently got a Go Pro Hero 8 from the GF for our anniversary and was looking into helmet or motorcycle mounts.

I can't actually mount it to my handlebars as I ride a '16 ZX-6R which has no space to mount those on so that leaves me 2 options which are either suction mounts (don't want to glue anything on the bike) and helmet mount.

Does anyone have any suggestions for either of the above? From my google review there seems to be so many cheap options and I can't tell which one would be best to use and I don't personally know anyone that has cameras on whilst riding or I could have asked them.

Would appreciate any help as I want to record the riding season + start hitting track days :D.

Would something like the below suffice for road riding?

You might want to be careful with the helmet-mounted camera option as it could be lethal to you in a crash.

I used to have my GoPro helmet-mounted when I was riding (push bike) and had a crash at a relatively low speed of 30-32kph. As I was tumbling/rolling, the camera pushed my face into the ground and my sunnies dug into my eyes. I've got a permanent scar on my left eyelid. My helmet was deformed too - so you could say the camera deformed both my helmet and my face!

I have the GoPro mounted on the handlebar now (out front under my bike computer).

I've never ridden a motorbike before, but is there any room above the dashboard area? Otherwise, you can use the suction/sticky mounts (3M don't usually leave any residue when you peel them off) on the front of the bike.

    Good luck and ride safe!

    • Sorry to hear mate, glad you are okay now.

I think it should be okay with the motorcycle helmet as they are made for a bit more impact in case of an accident. I examined my bike and there isn't really a good place to place it on the top end because the visor blocks the vision. Side mount wouldn't look as good (I feel). I hear there is a fair bit of vibration on the bike as well.

  • Get the genuine GoPro helmet mount or one of the ones that goes across the chin bar of the helmet. Chest mounts can be pretty good too. I took some shots in india with the go-pro mounted on the fork leg and that looked pretty cool as well.

    • Do you have any example / links or the on that I posted seems okay?

      • I have that mount you linked. If you want to put the GoPro on your helmet that's the best one.

  • I've got one of these on my Shoei helmet which has a weird shaped chin, best chin mount you can buy:

  • They claim Schumacher's skiing injuries were more severe due to his helmet mounted GoPro

I've used the curved mount on the side and top of my helmet - be aware of the drag caused at high speeds and the awful wind noise

Some mount on the chin - best way is to attach the sticky mount off center and use a couple of arms to align the GoPro in the middle, since the curve of the helmet makes it difficult to stick dead in the middle

I now use the chesty harness for a more immersive angle and safety reasons
