Aldi trick price placement

notice they put the premium goods on the middle self and the cheaper stuff at the button so the price tag on the middle self is cheap and can fool you into thinking oh that "night rejurveing cream is only 2.94. I'll buy that. I treat myself. then POW at the checkout you have decide to bear the embarrassment of puting back a item you wanted but won't spoilt yourself in front of the shopppers and the checkout chick.

I don't think they do that on purpose. In fact sometimes its the other way round and cheaper stuff gets put on the top shelf(ie Specials). A lot of the times, it's the assistant's decision on where to put it.
Normally Aldi doesn't stock more than one brand for any specific product anyways. Even then the difference between them is at most 50c.
With the cosmetics it might be different since they sometimes get new brands every few months and have to sell both old and new products till the old one is sold out.

Source: I used to work at Aldi, but I don't how it could have changed in the past few months

  • No, I am talking about the middle self which is usually preceded by a cheaper self at the buttom with the buttom prices showing under the premium stuff.

NOt the top self but the middle.

I will do a video on this today.

  • Isn't the price accompanied by a description?

AFAICT placement is random and depends on the store. In any case it's the responsibility of the shopper to see that the description matches what you are holding in your hand. In fact I have been caught at Coolies by goods that were not on special put in proximity to specials, so I'm always wary.

    • Agree Coolies do that quite a bit at my local stores with W the worst offender (*ricks)with a P
      sneaky very sneaky

Doesn't seem like an issue for anyone who has been there before…

    I've never had an issue.

It's normal practice for retailers to put the high profit items or things they most want to sell on eye-level or easy to access areas. It's the same reason why we have to walk to the back of the supermarket to get the milk, just so we have the chance to look and potentially buy the stuff in between the counters and the back. Price tag not where they should be or misreadings happen, just be more careful next time I guess.

  • common market practice, EVERY supermarket does that. Pay attention to the products & prices next time.

I think OP means, when you glance at the middle shelf items, you tend to first look at the price on that shelf, as that is the shelf the item is displayed on, as in the case of most shops. Where as Aldi displays their prices on the above shelf/wall/hanger, for the item below.

Yes, I've had to check twice :)

  • Yeah I've noticed that as well..its because at woolies and Coles they tend to have the price below the item (which makes sense), but at aldi its placed above the item. Its not a big deal, but I can see where the OP is coming from

  • There's absolutely no uniformity in where supermarkets put their prices - some put it above, some below. It can be so easy to get misled if you don't read the label.

  • Yea BUT on their meat section all prices are at the BOTTOM!!

  • I'd say this is an elevation thing as opposed to a 'trick'. Aldi often sells stuff straight off the pallet so an overhead price is necessary for line of sight. With the shelves its probably just an attempt to keep the pricing location uniform.

The difference in meat seems relatively easy to explain, there's no place for a sticker for the top shelf of the fridge for overhead prices.

  • i always thought that companies pay extra for product placement as well. as in, if you want it at eye level, it costs more, but bottom row is cheaper. or something of that note

Just dont shop at Aldi. I wouldn't, if you want no name then buy from Coles/Woolworths works out the same and perhaps even cheaper if you buy some of their half price items in their weekly catalogues. Simple. :)

      err

Their half prices items are branded products only.

Their generic products are more expensive and lower quality then Aldi.

Get your generics from Aldi and branded from Woolworths/Coles on special, simple.

I've been pleasantly surprised at most Aldi consumables. They're far superior to home brands from the other supermarkets. The only thing we've gotten there that we didn't like was their frozen pizza.

      • And they offer a money back guarantee (if you are not happy in any way) that they actually honor with a smile

  • This is only happening on the middle self!!

prices are closer to goods but are not the price. they are usually cheaper and suggest that the product cheap price. quite deceptive.

Yea BUT on their meat section all prices are at the BOTTOM!!

  • open your eyes and pay attention.
be a buyer and say at the check out 'I don't want it'.

    your whinning is pathetic.

  • bit hard to bear the embarrassment of not wanting item because you can't afford it.
