Should I Trade in My Car?

Hi Guys,

I've got a holden cruze SRI-V 2013 model. 90k KMS on the dial and kept in pretty good nic.

A few people have indicated that I should look at getting rid of it as they are notoriously problematic.

I've had a couple of minor issues with the car but nothing noteworthy. I've always believed in running my car to the ground until it becomes a costly burden.

Keen to hear peoples thoughts on whether I should get rid of it or keep it until it dies…?

  • What’s the trade in value? What would you replace it with? Prices are up and supply is down now.

    • What’s the trade in value?

Trade in Value around $7-$8k. Private sale value around $10-$11k.

What would you replace it with?

Good question - open to suggestions

      • Can’t suggest anything unless you give an idea of your needs/wants. No point recommending a Mazda 3 if you want to tow a caravan. No point t recommending a Prado if it’s only for commuting.

        • Happy to replace with another sedan. Similar vehicle

@bemybubble: Keep it then. Run it into the ground.

No point changing it now because it MIGHT have problems - but start saving for your next car when it causes more issues.

Aren't the poll options both the same thing?

  • It's getting close to a timing chain replacement, that will cost between $1000 and $1500, including a new waterpump.

I got rid of my Cruze at just over 100,000km as things were starting to go wrong with it.

Currently not a good time to be looking though as limited supplies of new cars are available and second hand prices have sky rocketed for good condition cars.

    • timing chain replacement,

but why ? may be it has a timing belt then

  • Small sedan market is pretty dead, unless want a hyundai/kia/mazda supersized hatchback, thats only slightly longer then a honda jazz/suzuki baleno.
or buy a ancient Mitsubishi lancer sedan, but your buying a new car with a 2-3 year old build date.

  • NGL a friend of mine had one and he left it at the mechanic after the repairs outweighed the car's value ~$3500-$4000 in gearbox/motor issues.

Sell it while you still can.

It's a Holden…if it ain't broke, OP might soon be

  • It still has a dollar value. It's possible that it won't soon.
A bird in the hand etc….

Get rid of it before it gets rids of you

Take the money and buy an equivalent Hyundai / Kia / Toyota / Mazda

  • You really need to research what is the potential cost of keeping it. If it is going to cost you a lot more you might want to get rid of it or first sign of trouble go to the wreckers and get another car.
