Supersonic 3-Layer Rain Jacket (Factory Seconds) - $259 Delivered @ Mont

30

New but reduced due to "the potential for discolouration on the fabric lining (membrane) caused by perspiration, body oils and similar contaminants. This discolouration is on the inside and does not inhibit the performance of the garment; it is only superficial."

The website claim of "save $490" appears to be inaccurate. You can get the full priced women's version for $650 and some men's size-colour combos for $519. Nevertheless, getting jackets like this for $259 is as good a price as I've seen.

I haven't got much experience with the waterproof membrane they're using, but the specs are good (i.e. 25,000mm water head), and the company is known for making high-end stuff. These jackets are on the heavy side (480g for M). It might not suit you if you're going ultralight, and even with these hardcore Alpine jackets the market trend seems to be to aim for lighter. But the trade-off is a bomber hard shell with lots of pockets, adjustability and reinforced fabric around high wear spots. I have a similar jacket (Montane Alpine Pro) and it has been amazing; the approx. 200g weight penalty relative to UL gear has been largely worth it.

Mont has a good reputation among the Aussie outdoor crowd. I have some of their other gear (sleeping bag, clothing, tent) and they've all been excellent. They're based in Canberra, which is useful in terms of after-sales service etc.

Some of their other clearance gear is worth a look too. I.e. the UL sleeping bags and the "Slynx" Fleece.

Will this bring me the office cred that patagucci will?

    • +4

      You need Arcteryx for that

    • i got my patagucci for $124 so its not so bad.

  • what a joke

  • doesn't this looks like one of Aldi's jacket

  • +1

    I'll pay $25.90 max lol

Honestly if you are planning on a serious Alpine shell you get Goretex Pro, Polartec Neoshell or the newer eVent DVAlpine stuff.

I would not trust $500+ on a internally developed membrane when there are companies like Gore and eVent that hold dozens of patents and spend their entire time developing it.

Also the Mont pricing is just silly.
Interestingly they suggest to not tumble-dry the jacket after washing which is pretty standard for most tougher jackets as it restores the "shed-ability" of the waterproof DWR cones.

The Gore-Tex patent expired in 1997, which is why the market is now flooded with lots of different shell fabrics. While it's hard to get really comprehensive shell fabric comparisons, anecdotally the Mont one performs really well, and the waterhead + breathability specs are better than gore-tex pro (https://www.paddypallin.com.au/blog/all-about-waterproof-fab…).

But the key point here is that you'll struggle to get 3L Gore-tex Pro or similar for $260. In that price range you're in Patagonia Torrentshell/Goretex PacLite etc. territory, which isn't going to perform as well. Would I spend $500+ on it? No, nor would I spend it on any other alpine shell.

      • Sounds like you know your stuff about shell fabrics. Any idea if Polartec Neoshell is still top tier for breathability or been totally replaced by this point?

        • +1

I'm afraid I don't know my stuff enough to answer that one. Lots of forum discussions on Neoshell on hiking forums, but I remain ignorant :(

        • +1

          I do know my stuff.

Hence why I specifically referred to Goretox Pro which has much higher static mm pressure than most and typically a 70D face fabric which is important when dealing with lots of ice/scrub and rocks.
It also has a stiffer feel which is hugely important in high winds, like this one

Neoshell isn't the highest anymore at around 25-30,000g/m2 mvtr
For example >60k g/m2 mvtr jackets like this Berghaus hyper 140.
The eVent DV stuff tends to be a similar mvtr as neoshell but uses a different method that will vent better while the fabric is clean (i.e. short trips or walking around town).
The reason you choose neoshell is because the inner material is very comfortable, it is a "quiet" material and its hard wearing compared to 2L or 2.5L membranes.
I personally use Neoshell for my winter shell pants.

You would be foolish to take any of those lightweight jackets into real alpine conditions for multiday stuff. Which is what I was talking about in relation to the Mont jacket.

So NEW but with stains caused by wearing the Jacket "caused by perspiration, body oils and similar contaminants"…. so not NEW???

    • +1

It means it's new, but your perspiration, body oils etc. may cause stains over time as you wear it, which is why they've reduced it.

    • +1

New but reduced due to "the potential for discolouration on the fabric lining (membrane) caused by perspiration, body oils and similar contaminants.
