Petrol vs Electric depends on size of yard. I have no backyard and only a front yard, so electric works fine for me. But anything larger I would suggest petrol just because it will take you 3 days to mow as you'll have to charge your battery half way through.

I started off with used and as I could afford it I updated to new.

I now have a battery lawn mower and can do my back, front, and nature strip and still have plenty of charge left in it.

I'll be buying a battery edger/trimmer as soon as my petrol one dies.

depends on the size of the yard. I’d go electric/battery. Very easy to use, no smelly noisy petrol engine, virtually no maintenance.

If you can’t find a battery mower at a good price a corded electric is cheap and not too much hassle if you work out a mow pattern that means you avoid running over the cord.

I will never own petrol yard equipment again, unless I move to an acreage.

You'd get a bit more helpful replies if you post specifics:
how big is the garden? what trees? hedges? just grass?
how often do you plan on maintaining it?
    sloping or level block?
what other tools do you need (drills, sanders etc)?

  • Petrol > Electric, if you're on a budget.

Used > New, if you're on a ultra tight budget.

    What's your budget?

  • Second hand, why not.

I'd go battery over petrol if i could, unless I had a very large lawn.

I've previously had a 600m2 block with grass front and back and could do the whole yard on a single battery. Better off mowing more often when it's growing fast than waiting for it to be overgrown before you mow and having the mower have to struggle through it all.

Nice thing about the battery ones is they are pretty quiet and you can mow later in the evening without annoying your neighbours in the summer months.

Unless you've got heavy brush to cut, if it's just edging; a battery line trimmer will take care of it no problem.

Battery equipment has no real maintenance, you don't have to store petrols & oil's, and you don't have to worry about them going off. No seasonal tune ups & servicing and no oils to change.

Most batteries retain a significant charge to 500 cycles then degrade from there but at 500 cycles, that's almost a mow a week for 10 years.

For a commercial operation or large rural property, gas absolutely, but for the average homeowner I'd say battery all the way.
