I have two of these (Router and Point combos). The reviews have been glowing, but I'm a little underwhelmed. I'm in an apartment tower and some of these struggle to establish a connection with devices in the next room, let alone the distances they promise. It's an improvement on your typical ISP router with wifi, for sure, but not sure if the cost is worth it.

Also worth noting the POints have Google Assistant, but no Ethernet. That may not affect many (Google themselves said that) but I fall into the small percentage that would prefer the two router deal (stronger connection, ethernet port) rather than the one with the point (since Google Nest minis can be had so cheaply and I think the router's stronger performance is much more important than GA).

    • Agreed with your sentiment. I have the previous gen Google Wifi and whilst I can see some merit in having GA on the device which you're going to have anyway, I don't see why they needed to remove the two ethernet ports which were excellent at essentially giving troublefree connections to devices with ethernet ports but crappy or non existent wifi (such as a NAS or a console).

    • Agree - there are limitations with Nest Wifi. Not for people who want Ethernet or Wifi 6. I'm quite happy with mine however.

Not for people who want Ethernet

I just added a switch on the router. Problem solved.

        • What switch can you add please?

          • @Francis82: Any ethernet network switch. Standard equipment. Assuming you've got at least one ethernet port, you can always expand.

@ashanrath: I think they're talking about either (a) connecting all the Google WiFi devices via wired ethernet, or being able to hang other non-WiFi (ethernet only) devices off a mesh connected Google WiFi point, i.e. away from the main router point.

The Nest WiFi points do not have an ethernet port to allow you to do this, where the older Google WiFi points do.

@seedosrun: For me, it's the latter. My NAS is an old school MyCloud Mirror and only has Ethernet. It was formerly plugged into my ISP's modem router but since moving to Nest Mesh, I have tried Powerline (fail - I think that is old tech that is just as prone to issues as wifi is in a dense urban apartment tower). I've plugged it into the Nest Router this morning and it seems to be decent.

            • @ashanrath: Cheers

          • @Francis82: Any switch will do…

            I got an NETGEAR GS108 8-Port, which are great…

    • I agree. I sold mine and bought the Orbi rbk50.

I had 4 Google Wifi and my new Orbi 2 pack blows it out of the water for speed and reliability.

I had incorrectly assumed that the Google Wifi would work in a true mesh way, but really it's just a bunch of extenders off the main unit that is connected to the router/source. So if your primary point isn't roughly in the middle of the house it sucks.

The Orbi has a much better range and power.

      • I had the exact same experience, once you Orbi, you never to back

        • My Nest router is sadly not the the middle and at first I thought I'd be stuffed because of that. However it does seem that my two Points are doing a decent job. The problem is they have to be ridiculously close to each other ie the next room. I think their wall penetration power must be pretty lousy. Let's put it this way - I have an LG SN11RG sound bar and the rear speaker reception gets murdered by a Google Nest Router 5 metres away that is in line of sight - but when I slide it behind the kitchen wall to block line of sight, the reception problem disappears!

I'm surprised so few reviewers have picked this up - they make it sound like these things leave other mesh options in their dust! And most of the reviewers are inner city urban types too, so I really would have expected them to have similar issues.

      • Can you not wire each individual mesh unit back to your network switch?

From networking experience you would wire your Mesh Router to your Modem/Switch so your getting the fastest bandwidth obtainable via your LAN network and then wire each individual mesh unit back to the network switch also

/Just read that Nest isnt wired like the original Google WIFI where each hub had its own network cable conneciton, poor form by Google.

        • Yeah, I think there is a way to use Ethernet to handle the backhaul which may help (Orbi uses 3 bands - one dedicated to backhaul). But it still doesn't help the range.

    Looks like it’s $286 (2pk) and $393 (3pk) from TGGC.

    • Yep - more for those without access TGGC (if you can get me access I'd love to know!)

I signed up through G'Day Rewards. Even though it costs to join, I managed to get back the value of the membership in savings on my first purchase already.
Since then I've bought a few more things so it's all been worth it to me. Most recent was the Deco M5 deal which I've been super happy with since installing. They're out of stock now though.

  • Looking possibly getting some sort of mesh system, not sure if the 2 pack or 3 pack would suffice.
Would the extra unit being used slow down the speeds if generally not needed?
And if so would the performance be diminished much? cheers

Would not recommend googles mesh wifi. After firmware update, many users like myself have been left with half the download speed. Google does not acknowledge the problem and support just keeps telling me to reset my routers, even though there is no improvement
