[TAS] M&M's Chocolate 1kg $8 @ Shiploads

240

Since moving to Tasmania I’ve discovered Shiploads, a homegrown discount variety store. I walked into the Launceston store yesterday and saw a giant bin filled with these 1Kg bags of chocolaty goodness. They’re the genuine ‘made in Australia’ variety, too, not a grey import from overseas. This is presumably part of their Halloween seasonal range as there was other discount lollies in large quantity bags, too.

Unfortunately, they don’t ship their products so mainlanders miss out, unless you could convince someone who’s returning to smuggle some out with them. Or get a local to post you a few, I reckon you could easily squeeze three or four into the smallest Aus Post prepaid bag.

Excellent chockie price, and are you volunteering to be "a local"? ;)

Heh. Are you suggesting I become an OzB ‘dealer’? I suppose if someone PM’s me I could be persuaded to help a fellow community member. :)

Usually come down from Victoria to launie once a year to see the grandparents and I always give shiploads a visit just to go treasure hunting in the Hot Wheels bin and seeing what other cheap shit I can find.

Big ups to shipload, probably the second most exciting place in Launceston.

and what's the most exciting place in Launceston?, the departure lounge at the airport? (jk)

    • Are Tas allowing Victorians in yet?

      • +2

        Oh my no

      • NT-WA-SA-QLD from the 26th of Oct, NSW is still under review, probably unlikely anytime soon, Vic - I don't think it's been spoken about or considered yet, not in public anyway…

        • Ah I see.

          • @AussieZed: Maybe so, Vic has done great in clearing it, but there's a high chance it's still festering in the community somewhere…

Edit: They kept this quiet :o
Based on current public health advice, people travelling from low-risk jurisdictions from October 26 will be able to continue to transit directly though Victoria (only stopping for fuel) to Melbourne Airport or the Spirit of Tasmania terminal and not be subject to quarantine requirements that apply to that jurisdiction.

    • Did you forget that you posted this deal Chazzozz? I think Tasmania may be affecting your cognitive abilities.

      • Nah, just not paying attention. I was replying to the comment above and typed into the wrong field.

1 kg is the true 'Fun Size'.

Making good progress on first bag with another in reserve.

Shiploads is always a worthwhile stop, good prices all the time and enough stock of 'special buys' that there's no need to queue or brawl.

  • Are Australian made M&Ms better than those from overseas? Generally, I find our chocolate dreadful compared to European equivalents.

    • European is delicious, US stuff is corn syrupy garbage

      Are Australian made M&Ms better

No. Australian-made M&Ms contain azo dye E110 (food colouring 110 in the ingredients list), which is derived from crude oil. Usage of azo dyes are being phased out in many places worldwide because of their suspected side effects.

E110 is the colour that used to make custard tarts look a fluoro yellow colour, but most or all custard powders have removed it in the last 5 years or so.

E110 isn't in European M&Ms, so there are alternative safe food colours.

  • That almost makes me want to visit

Even better deal and better m&ms. Too bad low stock

  • Since moving to Tasmania

I’m so sorry to hear that

Quite the contrary, it’s the best thing I’ve done. I actually asked my work if I could move here. It’s a great place to be, I have done way more in a few short months than I’ve ever done anywhere else.

      • I expect it’s like moving from a capital city to Albury/Wodonga.

The difference is Tasmania is over 50% National Parks, World Heritage, reserves and such…

Anyone that appreciates the wild appreciates Tasmania…

          • @FLICKIT:

Anyone that appreciates the wild appreciates Tasmania…

I think Jacqui Lambie is more ‘captive’ now than ‘wild’

      • Do you work from home or does your work have a branch in Tassie? I've dreamed about it too, Tassie seems really good.

        • Both. 2020 means I can’t go into the office much these days, though.

  • Is 1 kg the biggest size in Aus?

Do these still come bundled with insulin injectors? Might grab a few.
