Best Value iPhone in October 2020

Hi, I'm looking at moving to iOS after having enough of issues within' Android, especially when it comes to Android Auto. The current phone that I'm using is an LG V30+ which I like. I'm happy with the battery, camera and size. I'm on Boost Prepaid which does not have access to the 5G band as of yet. Moreover, I'm ideally looking for a phone with 256GB of storage, as I feel 128GB might be a tad small (although I can always slim down my music collection a bit and get rid of song that I haven't listened in like over five years haha).

So I'd had a look at the iPhone 12 and, I think the price of $1400+ is a bit excessive. So I'm leaning towards the 11, even though I have a gut feeling that the price will drop even further. I'm looking for an iPhone that has the same screen size as my v30 and, I feel like the SE2 will be a tad small for my liking since my last four phones have been over 5 inches (LG V30, ZTE Axon 7, Moto X Play, Samsung Galaxy S4).

So my question to you folks, am I making the right choice in going for the 11 as the best overall value? Should I spend the extra money to get the 12? Should I look at a different iPhone altogether?

  • Maybe a second hand X or XS? Still great phones

  • SE if you want a new phone.
Fast and Well Priced for the specs

even though I have a gut feeling that the price will drop even further.

its staying in the line up so probably won't and apple is against deep discounting overall as it "lowers the value of the brand"
Sales and discounts never happen unless Apple organises them with retailers

Best value iphone is an oxymoron

Yes, iPhone 11. The RRP just dropped, so wait for the next sale (Black Friday, Boxing Day etc). I can see 128GB dropping to $1000 but 256GB unlikely.

  • You can expand the storage with a microsd card in a v30+…

Don't quote me on this but you may need to use itunes to transfer your music other. Or stream but then you won't need more storage.

I would say, get a Used but good condition iPhone. Be smart, don't get ripped off nor fall for scams.

If you want the most compact: iPhone SE ($250 - 128GB)
If you want Headphone Jack: iPhone 6S+ ($350 - 128GB)
If you want Rugged Metal back: iPhone 7+ ($400 - 128GB)
If you want Fingerprint scanner: iPhone 8+ ($450 - 128GB)
If you want OLED screen (cheapest): iPhone X ($700 - 128GB)
If you want to get ripped off (expensive): iPhone Xmas ($900 - 256GB)
If you want to get ripped off again (pricey): iPhone 11max ($1,700 - 256GB)
If you want the latest and greatest: iPhone 12 Max ($1,900 - 128GB)

As you can see, it really depends on what "value" means to you. Personally, I think the iPhone 8+ is the winner here, as its still very fast, decent battery life, water resistant, and fingerprint scanner. So no stupid gestures, no annoying notch, and the price is actually fair. It has a Glass backplate like all current phones, so a case is really Mandatory. You miss out on the Headphone Jack, that sucks, but you can buy this for an affordable $40 and make-do. It's the close to the LG V30 in terms of size, here's a quick comparison.

I don't recommend the iPhone Xr or iPhone 11-base model, both very expensive and you don't even get an OLED screen. I actually find it hard to recommend the 2020 iPhone FE* too. The phone is kinda big, but the screen is kinda small. The processor is hella fast, but the battery life is abysmal. The camera is phenomenal, but the price is kinda high ($800 - 128GB). It's definitely going to age well but you're going to suffer from Day 1 with that Fat Bezel and Poor Battery Life. Just too many downsides. The early-2020 Google Pixel 4a is the direct competitor, at $600 for 128GB. That's definitely not going to age as well, but from Day 1 you get much better battery life and much better screen/form-factor. The cameras are quite comparable between the two. But you do lose out a bit on the processor front and there's no water resistance.

*iPhone TE = The third edition (iPhone 5 2012, iPhone 5S 2013, iPhone SE 2015).
*iPhone FE = The fifth edition (iPhone 6/2014, iPhone 6S/2015, iPhone 7/2016, iPhone 8/2017, iPhone SE/2020).
