New Phone Scam or Network Error?

Well that's a new one (for me). Got a text this morning from an unknown mobile "Can you text me?". Not the strangest SMS I've ever got so I reply "Who are you".

Then they replied "You called me" with a screenshot of an unanswered call from my mobile number. Weird. Checked my call logs and no calls out this morning at all. So I replied with that info and they seemed happy. Could this just be a telstra stuff up or something more sinister?

Your number has been spoofed to spam others.

    Not unusual nowadays.

Give it a couple of days and the spammers will be using another number.

    OK thanks. :)

  • Had the same thing now from a few different numbers. Missed call, and when you call them back, no idea as they have not made any phone calls. I think it may either be spoofed caller ID or someone is in someone else's IP phone network and making call out from there.

  • Had that happen a couple weeks ago.
The weirdest I’ve had though was my wife sent me a text message and a couple of the words in the message were different to what I received.

  • Is your phone Jailbroken or Rooted and did you open the image. Images can and be used as an attack vector for root access. This virus can be seen used on Skype, Facebook and Outlook where the virus will duplicate itself by sending the same message to everyone in your contacts. It could also just be an ID Spoof.

    • Phone isn't rooted or JB'd. Haven't heard from any of my contacts either so hopefully just the IP spoof thing.

    Just blame shopback

  • Got something similar tonight, two missed calls and a text asking "are you ok mate?"

Could be genuine but also don't respond if it's just a check to see if the number is real.

    Any thoughts?

    • I'm running my phone 3G only and it seems to be working OK now. NOt sure about your text? Maybe someone is concerned because you're not answering cos the call isn't getting through? Bloody Telstra.
