Work Advice around Contract of Offer

Friend at work recently got a job offer at another company, both relatively large Australian-based companies.
He's at his 3rd notice week however apparently got a counter-offer to stay at the current company and work in a different team.
Given he's meant to start in 2 weeks at the other joint, what are the repercussions of cancelling the new offer?

I assume you mean not leaving the current company (sorry, it isn't clear what "cancelling the new offer" is).

Nothing, unless he ever wants to work at the other company in the future.
I've had people not show up on day 1 for no reason, and I've had some leave at lunch time on day 1, or not come back on day 2.

What they should do is be the decent person who gives notice to the other company and explains why; even just a little apology makes everyone happier.

100%. Try to salvage his relationship with the other employer by giving them as much notice as he can that he can't accept their off. Basically,

"Thank you for the opportunity." and

"Sorry, my current employer found a new position for me in a different department" or

"Sorry, I have already accepted another role"

I've been in pretty much the same situation before. Your mate needs to ask themselves why they were leaving and if they stay is that reason really going to be gone because odds are, it won't be and a couple of months from now they'll be kicking themselves and looking for work again.

    What are the $$$?

  • He can do whatever he likes

Don't stay. Current company now knows your friend is ready to leave. They probably just can't afford the time and resources to find a new employee during this period while still needing your friend's expertise. They can and will kick your friend out at anytime in the future.

    • Friend is changing teams. It sounds like a restructuring. Commonwealth has been doing funky stuff like this lately.

I agree that restructuring is normal but not when it was offered at his 3rd week of notice period.
I would recommend him to stay if it was offered before/during his first week of notice period.
For three weeks the company couldn't find a new/replacement person for that other team, thus the counter offer.

That's almost certainly the case. I worked at one place and when I resigned, just before lunch on my last day HR calls me in and says "We haven't started looking for a replacement for your role yet. You wouldn't mind staying until we get someone would you?" For context they knew I was taking a break and not immediately starting a new job. I didn't stay.

    • Good point

  • Be unemployed instead

  • repercussions of cancelling the new offer

Anything from none to being Blacklisted.

Tell "Your friend" to make his own decisions in life.

Getting an abusive email from HR and maybe blacklisted for a little while.

If the company's desperate enough for a skill they'll jump through hoops to get it.

  • repercussion is
You lose all credibility in your career with future employer/s. Staying with current employer, you equality lose creditability, as they know you are too piss weak to make a firm decision and move on.

You may cross paths with the new employer and perhaps in another company in future, and they will remember you as, "ohh that's the guy too piss weak to make up his mind, nahhh we don't want to deal with that time waster again".

However, nothing wrong with being piss weak and staying at the job you're comfortable with and you don't really care about the repercussions and you just wanna do your 9 to 5.

  • You haven’t told us the reason behind your “friend” wanting to leave current company.

    Pay?
Want a better role but none was offered or came up?
    Hate the current place/department?
    Closer to home / relocate?

If Pay, then it’ll affect credibility IMO, the other reasons seem more “justified”.
