Need Help Building my PC for work

Hi computer masters,

I need help with building my own PC, mainly for work use. I need a fast computer that can effortlessly handle multiple applications including resource heavy architectural pdf drawings.I may also use it to run CFD modelling which requires a fast processing speed.

Do you think the selection below will cut it? Any recommendation is greatly appriciated.

Budget around $1500 mark.

Thanks.

  • I suggest you compile that list in PCPartpicker to check for any conflicts.

    • Great, thanks for the link.

I just cant look at a 3900x with the rest of this build - It makes me sad.

    • Im not that computer savvy. I thought the parts that i hve selected is good enough for my needs, but obviously not :D

      • It's a few tiers above the rest of the machine.

I'd stay away from silicon power, last ssd I bought from them lasted about 6 months. Building a computer is like building lego these days, if you're comfortable reading the motherboard manual and watching some tutorials i.e how to mount cpu, what cable goes where, etc. you could do it easy.

Ram I'd go 3600mhz cl16, there's heaps of deals on here.

The software you want to use may be specific to hardware, so it's worth going to the sites and seeing minimum specs or specific hardware required to run.

If you got all the parts from deals from here, I think you could do much better and for about the same price, with a lot more quality components.

It's important to read stuff like. Ram QVL list for motherboards

That power supply has to be the worst possible power supply you can get to run a 3900x

There is one thing here that really stands out to me as needing urgent change and that is the case/power supply combo. For such an expensive and powerful CPU I would not rely on a power supply that is built in to a 68 dollar case.

You want something by a proper brand with 80 plus bronze certification or higher, an EVGA or Corsair or something like that.

I would also swap the motherboard for a B550 instead of an A520 but if money is tight that is not as important as the power supply.

    • Thanks. I will definitely look into that.

    • Hi Pirate,
Im looking at these 2 options:

      Gigabyte 450W 80+ Bronze Power Supply (GP-P450B) - $59.0

      Silverstone ET550-G 550W 80Plus Gold Essential Power Supply - $99.0

Is there a benefit in going with the silverstone?

      • I would say for a machine with a 3900x and a discrete graphics card you will definitely want at least 500W, also the gold certification means that the powersupply is more efficient and more likely to use higher quality parts.

You don't want to cheap out on the PSU as it can kill every other part in your PC if it fails.

  • I couldnt meet the budget

A few deals around might bring it down - Also chucked in a 750W PSU to factor in potential GPU upgrade in the future.

    • Thanks so much Fergy.
I might just go with your suggestion.
Will this Silverstone ET550-G 550W 80Plus Gold Essential Power Supply - $99.0 cut it?

      • It might, I just like to leave myself some extra power in case I get a bigger and better GPU, but if you're not going to get into gaming on it or anything, it should be alright. I've never had such a powerful CPU so others may be better suited to provide details on power usage.

You may be able to save on motherboard but I'd stick to B550, drop to a 500GB SSD, cheaper case if you wanted to save some more pennies

I'd also consider waiting for the next generation to come out and see what that has to offer………5000 series or whatever its called - I cant keep up

        • Thanks Fergy.

  • effortlessly handle multiple applications including resource heavy architectural pdf drawings

Definitely make the upgrade from a 1650 Super to 1660 Super, or if you're super flexible 2060 Super

    • I did not know that a better graphic card will benefit in pdf viewing. Always thought it was the processor and ram.
      Thanks for that.

  • Not going to wait for the new Ryzen? is it urgent to have a new rig asap???

    • wow, thanks for that. I didnt realise that the new ryzen 5000 series chips are about month away from being released.

      • hahahaha not sure if you're being sarcastic or not…

but for reference, a 6 core 12 thread ryzen 5600x seems to perform 10% slower than an 8 core 16 thread ryzen 3700x…
so huge single core gains, and solid multi core.

id imagine a new 8core/16 being as fast (faster in single) than a 3900x..

        • Not being sarcastic mate.
I assumed the newer chip is better than the old one.

You can probably find cheaper parts on today's ebay sale though

    • Thanks a lot mate.
