This looks to be prime exclusive deal - so title should include prime

  • I believe there's been cheaper deals in the past, I've seen $99 for 4tb etc

    • Yeah I got a 4tb from Big W at 99 last year now I can’t imagine to pay more than that.

Unless you can go back there, this is pretty good especially for 5tb

    Is this shuckable?

    • and if so will it have a 2.5 or 3.5 drive?

    • The elements drive I have had the usb soldered. But I'm not sure if this model

    • they don't have the standard sata pins even if you do manage to shuck and remove the usb pcb.

I bought the WD 5TB last sale and it lasted less than a month, so I can’t recommend it. In fact I’ve just pulled it apart because there was footage on there I hadn’t backed up yet…does anyone more savvy than me know if there’s any way to remove the USB plug and mount this with an adaptor or anything..?

        • might need to go to a recovery lab. These are not easy to deal with.

Anything above 2TB in recovery will take ages and recovery results will vary and you could potentially be charged in the thousands $$$.

Secondly, I'd use DVD+R/BD for cold backups. They are cheap and don't die from ferromagnetic degradation. It's a pain to deal with, but I'd put my money on bit rot rather than mechanical failure. You can also do parity discs so bits are iterated over multiple discs. It's a physical pain to make and hold onto DVD's but it's a greater assurance imho.

Can this be used as an external drive for a PS4?

    • +2

      Sure can.

I have their WD 3TB for years.
I had it connected with my Xbox One S, PS4 sold (rubbish), Xbox One S again, and now my current Xbox One X and Xbox Series X around the corner.
All my games are installed and run from it. Great loading time, faster than the console internal HDD.

My console and the WD stays on top of a laptop 5 fan cooling system to keep everything cooler allowing 5-8 hours of gaming without overheating anything <3

You won't be able to load & play x box series x games directly from this one though, which is annoying

  • I wish they started making all these Hard Drives with USB-C ports.

    • Agreed. So I just bought a 5TB My Passport Ultra with USB-C/Type-C.

Was about to pull trigger on Silver 4TB from Amazon UK for $174.78.

Then for $10.77 more I saw Mac obscured Silver 5TB $185.55 from US.

  • tossing up this or the https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/572479 Does anyone have previous experience with both brands and their reliability? Speed isn't a huge factor for me compared to not losing my data suddenly. Thanks

some more options, if you have eBay plus 20% off tonight 4 tb $111-$127 might want to search ebay for other plus deals

I've always had WD, and never had issues.

I've left some connected to my TV for months, and they're always powered on. I would personally stay with WD, as for personal experience I've never had a single issue.

      • Thanks for this mate, I'm only using for my desktop so it'll be sitting static for the foresseable future. Just a quick question how long should I expect something like this to last for, and when they do reach end of life are there any warning indicators?

        • I have no idea? Some of mine are probably 5-8 years old and still going strong.

  • Does this drop to 10mb/s transfer speeds like the SMR seagate expansions?
