    From Amazon reviews
Poor Australian app support. No Amazon Prime Video / Disney+. Geo locked everything.

For context, I live in Australia. Of my content subscriptions, only YouTube and Netflix works. Unfortunately, hardware VPN won't work for me since I'm currently on Nest WiFi. For reference - Viki, Disney+, Prime Video, Stan doesn't work in Australia.

    • Have you considered buying a cheap Asus router, setting up merlin and adding it into the mesh closest to your streaming device?

      • or get a chromecast

  • does anyone know if kayo sports work on these?

    • Doubt it. Roku is geo-locked. So if you use a VPN to pretend you're in USA, Kayo will then geo-block.

  • Excuse noob question:

My grandpa wants to stream vlc on PC in one room to TV with HDMI in another room.

    Chromecast 3?
    This?
    Other recommends please?

    • If this has the Plex app yes it can but if not I'd suggest another player.

Both my Roku 2 & 3 have the Plex app and you just need to add the free Plex Server to your PC.

      • Thanks for answer.

He has Plex on PC but trouble getting it to work on his TV (and my time is more valuable than his 50 bucks for a Chromecast or simar streaming device).

        Perhaps it's time I learned something new… Sigh :)

  • It's a UK version. I don't know if the firmware could be flashed to support Australian apps. Also I'm seeing many bad reviews like over heating. Connecting to Bluetooth is a nightmare. You need to do it via your phone's app. I would love to buy one if this works in Australia seamlessly.

    • Switching between UK/USA just required changing your Roku account and no firmware flash. So you need correct IP and correct account location, used with Getflix for many years. Id assume switching to AU is just the same, but seems pretty useless here if you don't want it for UK/USA TV.

      • Actually this is not completely correct. Roku hardware is also region based, so each area has a different model number. You can't get the UK hardware in the US and vice versa.

So don't buy one expecting to float between US and UK apps via account changes. You need a region account and region hardware. And I know for a fact that UK apps won't work on US hardware and probably vice versa.

        • OK well strange I got my one from the USA and mostly used it for UK iPlayer, only took an account change and reset and worked. Have moved it back and forth between UK/USA several times.

The only locked Roku I have are NowTV boxes, which you could get free in the UK. However those are a specific case much like Telstra TV.

Edit: Also mentioned here on official Roku site that region is set based on the Roku account you use. https://community.roku.com/t5/Accounts-Billing-Orders/Does-R…

          • @Pobman: Yes you're right about the Roku account it self being region based. But I don't think that applies to the apps.

Is your US Roku on this list?

            https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/help/questions/supported-devic…

Last time I tried BBC iPlayer US hardware 3600X stick with UK Roku account iPlayer installed but refused to run.

            • @randomdude: Nope, X model so not ending GB / EU, then again my NowTV model 4201 isn't on that list either, though 4200SK is.

Just to clear up people's confusion - no, you can't do a damned thing with this with regards to loading Aussie apps, or even creating an account without 'being' in the UK if you know what I mean.

BUT - what this is ideal for is for those who want to access BBC, ITV, My5, All4 as well as Netflix, Amazon and Plex VIA A VPN or DNS provider set to the UK region. Roku has great solid apps and is simple to use, and provides great value to watch UK content as long as you know how to bypass geo-restrictions.

About 12 months ago I was visiting the UK, picked one up at Argos. Configured an account while I was there, loaded all the apps and checked that they all worked in the UK. Then I took it back home, set it up via a UK VPN and everything continued to work (I should add, I could have just as easily set it up from scratch back in Aus with a VPN)

Unfortunately after 12mths the Roku wifi crapped itself and now it doesn't work anymore (known issue) so I threw it out. I would have jumped on this deal to get another one but I decided to move to the new Google TV this time and I've spent the last few days setting up an old Android phone with a Google UK account and testing all the UK TV apps via the VPN so I should be able to set it up pretty quickly when it arrives.

    • Hoping to do the same with the Google TV. Is an Android phone required to add UK apps, an update would be great!

      • I haven't got my Google TV yet, but I've been using an old Android phone to set up a Google account behind a UK VPN. Once that's done, signing in with that account let's me access all the UK apps via Google Play.

Once loaded and behind the VPN, they work fine. I'm not expecting Google TV to be any different.

  • I purchased an older model from Amazon US years ago. The simple remote and interface is great for kids and the oldies.

The following apps work with Australian logins: Netflix, YouTube, Plex, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Tubi.

You can't get Aussie apps for it, also because it uses Roko OS you can't sideload Android APKs.
