I love Android as much as anyone but an iPod Touch is a great entertainment device just due to the selection of games available on the AppStore and how well the device performs. You could get Android phones for the same price, true. But they'll be low-end versions that'll have subpar gaming abilities at best.

Each platform has its strengths; Android as an OS is more capable/customisable and iOS is better for entertainment from a gaming standpoint and has more quality apps. Android is getting there but iOS still reigns supreme in the entertainment area.

This is a great deal because you get a great device + 30 dollars to spend on some great quality casual games. I have the Galaxy SII and the Asus Transformer but I still like checking out the new games in the Appstore on my iPod Touch.

There is one Android phone that offers similiar (or even better) performance and yet it is cheaper. It is Acer Liquid Metal: $129.

The CPU is 800Mhz and is the same gen. as the iPod 4g.
The GPU is Adreno 205 - it is not too bad either. All gameloft HD games will run fine. Air Attack HD runs very smooth, Need for speed, Plants and Zombies and the Angry Birds - piece of cake.
The 3G support includes HSPA+ (which is the same as iPhone 4S!!!) - and Telstra Next G is supported.
GPS is on par as iPhone 4.
        Camera - okay.. 5MP.
Only down side is the limited phone memory.

That said, all the other Android ones in that price range (below $150) are rather slow. iPod Touch 4g is quite good BUT there is no doubt Acer Liquid Metal is a serious challenger. It does show if Android phone makers do price their phones properly, they CAN give Apple a run for the money.

I own multiple i-devices.. and yes they do have more quality apps at the moment… but the gap is narrowing. More and more apps are being ported across.

For us, consumers… we want and need competition.

        • +1

Definitely need something to stand toe to toe against the iPod Touch but I still believe it's the best PMP available CURRENTLY. No doubt one day we Android fans will have something to match the iPod Touch (I think Samsung is trying with the Galaxy Players) but as it stands now, on this day at the time of this deal, the iPod Touch at $188 with 30 bucks for apps is an absolute bargain.

        • The Acer Liquid Metal is great but the $128 price is from JB hi-Fi and LOOONNNGGG sold out.

So the point is kinda moot.

If you know where to get one for $128, let me know. I want one!

    • EDIT: Plus, the lower end Android devices have severely low internal memory capacities. At best after installing Angry Birds, the phone will complain about low storage. I had the HTC Dream since launch day and I ran out of internal memory within 2 days. So the point you made is a bad one. Show me any Android phone that's as capable as the iPod Touch 4th Gen for $188 and I'll admit you're right (disregarding the Galaxy SII that was being sold for $2 for the first 10 people in Sydney that queued up when Samsung were giving it at an insane price).

      • The Acer Liquid Metal for $128.

YES, the internal memory isn't great on low end phones, but you can use APP2SD and move all games to your SD card (it's only like $9 on eBay for an 8GB Micro SD Card)

        http://www.gsmarena.com/acer_liquid_mt-3519.php

        • The Acer Liquid Metal for $128.

Has anyone got a link to a store you can actually buy the phone at this price? All I can find is an expired JB hi-fi deal.

      • I could be wrong but I think HTC is the only Android manufacturer that shortchanges on the internal storage. The rest give you more realistic sizes like 16GB.

      • +1

To ragflan… 3 months ago… yes.. nothing in Android world priced below iPod Touch came close matching iPod Touch 4g in terms of performance.

But, Acer Liquid Metal came alone and started selling at firesale price right on the get go.

The next wave of Android devices are coming. However, Apple is yet to release its trump card… iPod Touch 5g (dual core CPU). Let's hope Android keep up with their wave of new devices so we will get to see iPod Touch 5g sooner.

xDEFINE and netsurfer: our comments will be deleted soon as off topic but my point is that iPod Touch and AppStore offer more value for 188 than Acer Liquid Metal and the few games that it will be able to handle. Plus again, 512MB ROM <— very limiting.

        • +2

Link2SD + SD card… I can put more games on Liquid Metal that way than iPod Touch 4g/8GB (which has only 6GB usable space) - I have to delete games on my iPod Touch 8GB on a regular basis.

My mate put 96 apps (including games) on his Acer Liquid Metal so far.

Trust me.. I own both devices.

        • Thanks netsurfer. I'll look into Liquid Metal (our discussion might be deleted as off topic so I uploaded 2 screenshots for those interested).

        • @netsurfer.

With an SD card, your $128 Acer phone isn't quite so cheap anymore.

But you keep flogging the Liquid Metal when it's NOT available at $128 anymore.

I can see that it's a great deal but only when it's available.

Great Deal. Mods might delete some comments made because they might be off topic. To save OzBargain the bandwidth: 2 screenshots of the discussed points for competitive products. Hope mods won't delete this post.

    • doubt any of your posts will be deleted, this hasn't turned into an Apple vs Android argument so shouldn't happen. One thing to note is the liquid possibly provides better video playback than the iPod due to having a multitude of video players. It won't be doing any HD videos but more formats will be supported

      • Did a quick test… iPod Touch vs Acer Liquid Metal - Media Playback…
Too lazy to copy files onto iPod Touch.. so.. the test is done by streaming video files from a NAS using DLNA (on both devices).

iPod Touch - Media Connect with Flex: Player
Acer Liquid Metal - BubbleUPNP with MoboPlayer

        AVI (480p) - (Y) Both stream fine
        MP4 (480p) - (Y) Both stream fine
        MKV (480p) - (Y) Both stream fine
MKV (720p) - (N) Both struggle big time. Acer Liquid Metal probably a bit better… Both unwatchable - too laggy.
        No point testing MKV (1080p).

So.. I would say the two are the same in terms of media playback (once you get the proper players). Both iOS and Android have lots of players… some are good.. some are… well let's say inferior.

  • @ChrisMcMahon… There should be some available in the JB HiFi Pacific Fair…

    • Thanks, I'll give them a call tomorrow.

      • None at Pacific Fair, Mermaid, Bundall, Robina, Helensvale or Tweed City.

"We've been sold out of them for months Mate."

  • -2

I think the real truth is that neither the iPod Touch or the Liquid Metal is really ideal. 70% of the things I would do is watch 720p video. Neither of them can do it.

My 4 year old + year old Archos can though.

Now, some Archos products support 1080p.

I am currently watching 720p Inglorious Basterds on my Galaxy Note :)

  • Just wondering, before taking the plunge, if there will be a new iPod with the same internals/specs as the iPhone 4s this holiday season?

    • There will never be an iPod with the same internals/specs as the current gen iPhones, it's one way to push people into buying the iPhone.
If there is going to be a 5G revision of the Touch with the A5 dual core, it will have another underclock. And most likely won't come out until May if it doesn't appear before Christmas.

      • Thanks, but it's a bit odd to miss the holiday season and refresh in the middle of the year. I'm not sure people will leap from iPods to iPhones just for A5 or some specs - they are not exactly interchangeable. Then again this sort of exclusivity for iPhone 4S might be perceived as a marketing edge.

        • Normally they update the Touches and other iPods in September every year. But because they delayed the iPhone from May this year to October this year, there was no way in hell they'd update the Touch at the same time as the iPhone, and hence only the white refresh came out.

My bet is the iPhone and the Touch have swap released dates and the next Touch will be released in May and the next iPhone in 10-11 month's time.
With that being said, there is still an outside chance that the iPhone 5 will be released in May next year as you have to admit the 4S is a let down and Android will be fighting back with quad cores next year, and you have to admit there isn't really anything that's giving the Touch any competition, sure there is Creative and Cowon fighting in terms of sound quality but there is nothing in terms of a complete entertainment device.
Then you have to factor in Steve Jobs… The next 12 months is going to make or break Apple, can they continue the work that Jobs has done and survive or is there going to be a mix up that can either fatally wound Apple or smooth out the bump and continue onto domination. And this means possible product life reshuffle, launch dates adjusted, product lines discontinued or created.

          TL;DR
The short version of the above, it would be logical for the Touch to be pushed till May next year and the iPhone pushed till September/October to keep the "1 year" iPhone cycle.
But it's anybody's guess, the next 12 months Apple would be doing backflips to find out which way they're heading and that means their product launches, cycles and life span will be a tangle that even the CEO himself wouldn't know which end is which.

        • @Trance.. that make sense, and I agree - my guess is that if Android continues its march the way it is doing (over 50% share) into next year then Apple might get into a panic mode - and release sooner with more variants etc. And without Steve Jobs they might not have the will power to buck the market demands, so it should be interesting..

        • Take the 50% share with a grain of salt though
That might be because Apple don't have a low or mid end smartphone. What you should be doing is comparing iPhone sales with the sales volume of the SGS2, Nexus and others in the same price range. Would probably see more even distribution then, like seriously walk down Sydney any day and all you will see is basically iPhones!

If anything they won't be worried with the iPhone, but they may be pressured to release a low-mid level variant but that seems unlikely due to the Touch, it'll be too similar, if they tone down the iPhone the only difference with the Touch would literally just be the phone bit (toning down would most likely include removing GPS and lowering camera reso).

At the end of the day the 50+% Android has shouldn't be a worry to Apple in terms of phones, it's the market share in the price bracket they're aiming at that should be the worry, and I'm pretty sure Apple are holding their own on that one.

Confirmed price match @ Dick Smith.
Have a White 8GB on hold at my local.
5% cheaper with Woolies Staff Discount.

    Thanks to OP for posting.

    • and the $30 iTunes card?

      • Yep

        • Well DSE at Altona told me, and I quote "We can match the $188 price but we can not include the$30 iTunes voucher". The reason stated was, and again I quote "Apple FIX the pricing we can sell at and if they find out we discount they take away our license to sell Apple products". I couldn't have been bothered arguing so I just walked out.

  • Cheapest facetime capable device available & with iMessage on IOS 5 - this device will pay for itself :)
    Great Deal! Thanks

this is the CHEAPEST SO FAR PRICE yet

and I bought one at DICK SMITH 1 week ago (White) for $198 - as it is unopened and as a true ozbargainer I will probably hustle DS to match or return. It's a tough game…

@ elguapo - Not sure why you couldn't get it. Hopefully you can have better luck with my receipt.

Love the good guys … just bought one and they gave the deal to me for $182 … even not asking for a further discount :-). Wow !!!

    • Wow….that's great

    • Same for me, as I didn't ask for any better price but got it for $186. I have shopped there before for business though, so they know me.

  • Thanks for posting this deal. My wife also picked up the $188 deal for $182.00 at Good guys without asking (discount for cash - payed with c.c). Very happy. Bought same device from Dick Smith 3mnths ago for 198 without the itunes card included

  • It is worth paying a little bit more & get the 32g version??

    • If you are going to put in movies, then the 32GB version is recommended. Games can fill the space up quickly as some are close to 1GB now of days.

Apple consistency with their products is not that great. I bought a 8GB with a strong yellow tint that makes the graphics looked very washed out. Exchange it and got one that is perfect. I had a 32GB with a dirt in the middle of the screen but had the blue tint screen that people wanted, exchange it and got one with a dust speck on the side with a slight yellow tint. Went to exchange it again, but the one they offered had a dust speck as well which is closer to the middle so kept the second one and Apple says this is normal manufacturing defect where it is possible to have dust, dead pixel on the screen and they will only exchange it once. Second time I had to get a manager to get it done and now not allowed to exchange it again for any screen defect.

      • Wow so much dramas! Thanks for the tips

      • You must be the unluckiest iPod Touch buyer in the world.

        • There's others who are unlucky as well if you do a google search you will see. Iphone, Ipod, Ipads, there's quite a few issues but also depends on each individual tolerance of the defects.

  • Dicksmith Baulkham Hills wouldn't price match because 'was below stock price' :\

    • Edit: Winston Hills Big W price-matched with the $30 itunes card after getting the manager :)

      • DS could not match so returned the one I purchased from them for $198 (as I was still in the 7 day period) - then went to GG's - "pay less for cash" price meant $182 - so effectively an iPod Touch 8GB for $152 - thank you OP - you saved me $40

        • I don't see any true OzBargainers would've valued the $30 iTunes card at $30! LOL

I would say with at least 25% off, the $30 card should be closer to a little over $22. ;)

  • I just got mine for $180 from Good Guys in Mandurah - Thanks!

  • It's a really good deal, pity only the 8GB though. Harvey Norman Broadway had (no longer available) an offer for a few weeks recently after the white ones were out where they sold the 32GB for $294 (black model only), including $30 iTunes Card and 20% off any full priced headphones.

  • Apple Stores don't match. They said "We don't do deals like this".

Can you believe that? I mean, resellers are able to offer better bargain than the retailer themselves…
