Gaming PC for MSFS2020 - Possible for $1000?

Hi guys,
I'm looking to either buy or build a PC for MSFS2020, would it be doable to get decent performance for around $1000?

I've been a Mac simmer all my life (using X-Plane 11), so I know nothing about which parts I should buy. Already have a good monitor, so only need the PC itself.

I had a look at this post about a gaming PC for $1000, but not sure if any of those setups would be suitable for MSFS.

Thank you!

  • I think it would be 'doable' for $1000, but what experience you're expecting is another issue. As example, I have i7 with 2070 Super and it runs the game fine, but there are other input influences which affect the play-ability.

With low-mid range machine, generally, decent performance will come at the cost of lowering the graphics settings and visa versa.

Check out something like this video and others on YouTube as indication of performance based on card

    • Thanks for the input - what do you think the minimum would be to be able to play it at good frame rates at (for example) high settings?

    What resolution is your monitor?

Hey OP, just for fun I put together a solid list of parts on Shopping Express for pretty much the same price as that 2060 non-Super build https://i.imgur.com/tQrpwbU.png Just search for the parts on the site if you're interested.

MSFS 2020 is a CPU limited game btw, but 2060 Super is a great GPU for 1080p and even 1440p gaming.

    • Thank you so much!

    • Hi @CompulsiveOzB - I'm pretty ready to start buying parts to build the PC, and happy to spend up to around $1300 if I can get something that will run MSFS2020 at High End or Ultra settings on a 1440p monitor. Is this list still valid or should I be looking at higher-end parts?
      Thank you :-)

Are you still firm on building it yourself? If you don't mind pre-built, I'd keep an eye out for 3060 Ti builds by Techfast which could well be around $1300-$1400 considering the second post from the top there with the 3070. As for that list I made, no it wouldn't be valid anymore.

        There's a 3060 Ti on pre-order for $709 at PLE atm, see here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/588832

If you're in no rush accumulate components over the next 2 months. there's going to be some great sales and hopefully some stock liquidations with the next gen coming in. You can pick up some real bargains if you're paitent. And you'll get a lot more quality components. My word of advice is to read the comaptable hardware guides for each component you buy e.g. Ram QVL list for motherboards.

Minimum specs for flight centre isn't that intense, but it will chew up basically any hardware you can throw at it. I'm running it on a 2700x 5700xt 32gb ram @ 2933mhz and get around 40-45fps on ultra 1440p. It uses upto 20gb of ram sometimes.

    • Thank you - I'm definitely not in a rush and I would like to accumulate parts slowly to spread the cost.

Amazon prime day sale & Black friday sales will serve you well. I did well with an Ebay Plus account last year too. I was also lucky enough to jump on this bad boy.

I built an amazing rig for 2k all up with monitor, keyboard & mouse. but I spent a lot of time looking and waiting.

hello, what do you think the time frame will be for these developments, for example when mentioning the next generation of computer technology would that be happening within a month or so and subsequently the drop in overall pricing from that point on. I am asking more out of curiosity than buying as I think most sales coming from places like Techfast (and some other groups) are probably the most reasonable baseline presently

edit: sorry just noticed this post was from over a month ago now
