Castrol EDGE 5W-40 A3/B4 Full Synthetic Engine Oil 6L $39 @ Repco

180

First time I've seen this product that replaces the EDGE 5W-40 SN. Specs look great; much lower viscosity than the old product and includes all the manufacturer approvals that the OzB favourite EDGE 5W-30 A3/B4 meets and more.

  • ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4
  • API SN/CF
  • BMW Longlife-01
  • MB-Approval 226.5/ 229.3/ 229.5
  • Porsche A40
  • Renault RN0700 / RN0710
  • VW 502 00/ 505 00

Compared to the 5W-30 which is on the heavier end of the 30 weights, this is only slightly higher viscosity being on the lighter end of the 40 weights so I reckon it's a good alternative. Great deal for 6L when 5L of 5W-30 is going for $36 at the moment.

    I use this normally,
Could anyone tell me if it’s compatible?
I need to do a service too
    I drive a Mercedes (2002)

      • It recommends me 0w40
        Or 5w30

        But I normally use 5w40

        • Which weight does your car's manual specify, and which MB spec? Since you've been using the Penrite then I assume it's either MB 229.3 or MB 229.5, which this also meets so yes it is compatible.

          • @Junk Sifter: Castrol EDGE 0W-40 A3/B4 with Fluid TITANIUM is formulated for prestige and high performance engines in both petrol and diesel passenger*, light commercial vehicles, naturally aspirated or turbocharged. The exceptional characteristics of Castrol EDGE 0W-40 A3/B4 ensure that all engine components, from the valve train to the bearings are fully lubricated to provide optimum engine performance. Designed to run at their optimum level on lower viscosity oils, where the manufacturer recommends an ACEA A3/B4, API SN or earlier specifcation 0W-40 lubricant.* Excludes diesel passenger vehicles fitted with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF).

This is the recommendation when I entered my vehicle details

            • @Kawaii: The most definitive way to confirm is to check the MB specs required for your engine and use an oil that meets that.

Saying you drive a 2002 Mercedes is meaningless given the range of vehicles they made.

  • I use the older edge 5W-30. Can I mix them if I have a couple of litres of the older one?

  • Yeah but I have 4 bottles of the old stuff in the garage ;(

    • I've got 3.5 bottles. Got them for $27 a pop years ago, was about 10 bottles. I just bought them and didn't think about what it really meant in terms of how long it would last lol.

  • Can you use 5w-40 in place of 5w-30? I normally use the 5w-30 Castrol Edge for a Toyota Aurion.

If I've got some left of the 5w-30 can I mix it with this one?

Which is better quality oil as they seem different blends.

    • +1

This stuff only has a slightly higher viscosity than the 5W-30 so it's a good alternative.

It's full synthetic, as long as it meets your vehicle's manufacturer specifications and you change your oil according to the recommended service intervals the quality is moot.

  • @junk Sifter is this oil DIESEL compatible known as DFP compatible to run in an BMW X5 ? Tks

    • No, it's not according to label on the back

    • No. For DPF it would require low or mid SAPS oil, maybe something certified ACEA Cx not ACEA Ax/Bx. Look in your car's manual for BMW's specifications.

  • you need BMW LL-04 spec oil, u can get valvoline MST 5W-40 for 39$ from repco and then send ur receipt to valvoline to get 20$ back for 19$ its great. only issue its 5 litre so might need to buy more than one but u still get 20$ back.
