Audioengine HD3 Vs A5+ and Where to Buy?

I'm looking for a set of speakers for desktop, mainly used with computer/laptop but also various other devices, and a piano keyboard.

Anyone have any hands on experience with the HD3 and A5+ powered speakers from Audioengine?

PCCaseGear used to sell them, but not anymore. Who is the go to supplier these days?

  • I just bought mine from Melbourne HiFi last week. Took a week to ship to Tassie. https://www.melbournehifi.com.au/collections/audioengine
Doesn't look like tha A5+ wireless is in stock anymore though but HD3 are.

    • yep I too purchased from Melbourne Hifi few weeks back (walnut colour) for $500 and just got a Yamaha sub hooked up (i was missing the sub-bass, although the base on the speakers that size is quite acceptable). got them sitting on the DS1 stands too and helps to direct the sound more towards your ears. I actually really really like them. quite expensive but well worth it IMO if you're after something with good sound and look quite aesthetically pleasing.

@aleph1 where abouts are you located? I saw that a lot of retailers have just gotten more stock of the HD3 in.

      • Did you get the A5+?

        • Nope I got the HD3's in Walnut. I was tossing up between those and the A2+ but decided not to wait for the A2+ to be restocked and thought the additional DAC in the HD3 would be enough of pro over the A2+.

edit: reason why i did not go for the A5+ is because of the limited space i have on my desk. the HD3s fit my workspace much better. and i had room beside my desk for a sub (Yamaha NS-SW100)

          • @itsmehuey: ok, thanks. I think I have to decide between the HD3 or the more expensive A5+ Wireless which is about $699.

            • @aleph1: nice. if you aren't after something with crazy bass then the HD3 is a great compact speaker for your desk if space is limited. and you can always add a sub like i did later down the track. here's what my HD3 setup looks like on my desk: https://imgur.com/a/SuuH3AF

sub is on the floor beside my desk

              • @itsmehuey: Nice. I'll take a good look at the HD3's.
That's a lot of tabs you've got open there… Good luck with AWS exam.
I don't have any of the qualifications unfortunately, but I spend most of my day inside AWS.

                • @aleph1: thanks. yeah I've only got a cloud practitioner certification at the moment and the company i work for pays for my certification so what the hell why not right? i'm still yet to work in the aws landscape but will most likely get my hands dirty soon enough.

maybe see if you can go check out both the HD3 and A5+ to see what suits your desk more in terms of the size. There should be some videos online too on the HD3 vs the A5+. Either way I'm sure you'll be happy - the A5+ was just too big for my desk and I like the aesthetics of the HD3 more

  • I'm using two Harmon Kadon Studio 6 speakers, bluetooth mono speakers with a huge amount of bass but overall nice and flat. I use a 3.5mm audio splitter cable to get stereo out of them. And if I ever go to a beach party or host a house party something, I can use the two speakers. It's not the best solution but I like the idea of spending a lot of money on good bluetooth speakers and using them as my main speakers. Instead of standard bookshelf speakers which require their own power and don't actually sound that powerful on the budget end. These Harmon Kadon speakers are like party speakers, neighbour bashing on your door kind of window shaking loud if you play them both at full volume. They don't distort at high volume and they sound great at low volume, the power is always there at any volume and it just sounds great. The speakers are big and kinda goofy looking, more like a handbag than a speaker.

  • I've had my eye on the A5+ at Umart, but I'm in Brisbane.

Looks like Scorptec and JB have some according to staticice.

    Good luck!

    • Thanks, JB looks OK, but I guess I want the A5+ Wireless… I didn't realise there were two different versions of that speaker.
$699 is quite steep, guess I'll have to wait for a decent sale or something.

  • Anyone have a HD4? How is the performance?
