So I trialled using a 2nd SIM for additional mobile data only (amaysim + kogan).
I found little nuances painful:
- asking which sim to use for calls
- sending auto-txts when not taking a call, it sends from the other number, which confuses people. 'eg. Calling SIM1 - but SIM2 sends the message 'I'll call you back later'
This is on andriod (P30 Pro) - I'm hoping there is a way to 'force' SIM2 to be used for mobile data only - no cellular at all.
Is there a way to do this?
Kinda made sense.. but what I'm after is:
Sim one - Calls (or Calls/Data if it must be)
Sim two - Data
I couldnt work it out in the Sim Management Setting - it didnt allow Calls to be turned off on one Sim.
yeah i am almost certain you will always have calls enabled on the Data only sim
Saying that you could always ask your Sim Card Provider to Bar outgoing calls/sms on the sim you want use for Data Only
Dang. I'd hoped to be able to use it data only and no calls with little hassle.

SETTINGS AND CHOOSE OPTION
I have a dual sim OPPO a91 and in in the settings > SIM card and Mobile Networks tab there's the option to select which sim you want for data, which sim you want for calls and/or you can select for both sims for data/calls.
I'm on a Samsung and all I need to do is:
* Go to Settings
* Click on Connections
* Click on Sim Card Manager
From this menu I can set the default SIM for:
* Calls
* SMS
* Mobile Data
If you have a search function in your setting app, use that to locate SIM Manager
The pain points can be addressed as mentioned in the other comments. Select the preferred sim for Calls, Messaging and Data.
But there is no setting to block calls/messages from the data-only enabled sim.
A lot of Dual Sim Phones have settings as below
1)
Sim One can be for Data/Calls
Sim Two can be for Calls only (sms etc)
2)
Choose Which sim is Data/Calls and Which sim is Calls Only
One Sim will always be DATA and CALLS and one will CALLS only
Its rare to find a dual sim phone which supports Data on both sim cards
Huawei have a sim management setting which on some devices have Smart Data Switch which will switch to the sim with the best signal etc for Data and also allows you to set a per sim card data limit.
I hope this all makes sense.
