Good price i think for this 48 DVD set (you need region free dvd player). The technology in the show should have arrived by the time you finish it.
JB sell a similar box set for $294

Son of a b**ch!! I paid $200 per season for this show when the DVDs came out in 2002. Total expense = $1400 :( And I've only ever watched them once. They also take up half a shelf on my bookcase. However, mine are region 1s. I would never consider the PAL version of this TV show, because the voices are pitched higher due to the 4% PAL speedup. The intro theme sounds ridiculous in the higher pitch, as do some of the voices. I prefer to watch shows in their original format.

spoken like a true trekky :).
$1,400 worth of star trek gear should automatically give you a star fleet uniform…. or have you already got one?

    • yeah i remember paying $150 per box/season. I have all of TNG/DS9/Voyager and Enterprise. Can't stand TOS tho…

I have watched TNG at least twice…so got more of my moneys worth :P

      • Actually I think the seasons were $99.99 USD each in 2002 weren't they? But the exchange rate back then sucked, so it worked out to A$150 or so, once you factored in shipping.

Thats nothing. I have the entire series of Voyager on VHS tape @ $20 per tape, and no longer have a VHS player. Each tape only has 2 episodes.

  • can we watch this in australia?? coz this is region 2 right?? please someone answer me..
got a drvd drive in pc set up for region 1 but i dunno why can read australian dvd which is region 4

    • You need a multi-region player. Yep UK is region 2

      • so i should buy a new drive for my pc to read this dvd??

        • Your computer (Windows) will check the region and ask you to change it (which you can only do a few times before it locks).
But download VLC and it ignores regions and you can play dvds on your computer.
(Best to test this first by getting your hands on a non-region 4 dvd).

  • That's interesting about the 4% speedup - now I understand why 'The Big Bang' theory intro theme sounds slower in the US than in OZ!

That show is modern enough that it should not have this problem, unless the studio commits epic fail.

EDIT: Some research suggests that it does have this problem. There is NO excuse for this today.

    • I've noticed a lot of cartoons (The Simpsons) and modern sitcoms are also sped-up, I can't stand a lot of US shows with the speed-up even on digital. Some suggest it's not just the PAL conversion causing the speed-up, it's networks trying to squeeze more into less if a show is running overtime.

Bluray HD remasters are coming early next year.

    • I don't think it's possible. The first 2 seasons of the show were only filmed in NTSC video which explains why the video quality is so lousy on the DVDs. It would be impossible to produce them in HD. The rest of the seasons are on film so it could be done.

      • +1

It's definitely coming to blu ray. AFAIK they are re-doing all of the special effects.

Yes, take a look here for a good idea of what it's going to look like…

          http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/

Four episodes to be released 31st January 2012. Note that 13 seconds of the original film elements for the episode "Sins of the Father" were not found and will be upconverted from SD. Hopefully there won't be any other film elements missing.

And yes, it will be in original 4:3

      • AFAIK all seasons were filmed on 35mm film, but most special effects were done on video.

        • Yes I believe they were all shot in film, but for some reason only season 1 & 2 "survived" on videotape. This is why on the DVD release of those seasons, the video quality is awful. It is much better from season 3 onwards. So it will be a miracle if they manage to release season 1 & 2 in HD!

love the blu ray remasters , the difference in the original series was amazing.

Love the HD widescreen version of Friends and Seinfeld…..maybe make these widescreen as well.

    • that may not happen anytime soon unfortunately. TNG was mastered using video transfer. So all the special effects / editing would have to be re-done for blu ray.
Thats why TNG quality always looks so bad!

  • +1

Thankfully they are not, they will be 4:3. As it was shot OA full frame 35mm, and WS would involve criminal cropping

  • Star Trek Voyager is also the same price as TNG, DS9 is not on special :(

    • +4

Compared to TNG, Voyager should be a third of the price :P

Don't forget to watch an episode in Spanish/German/Italian for full effect

    • hahahha…. now that would be funny!

captain says "engage" with the hand gesture…. spanish is "participar", italian is "ingaggio", but you'll never guess what it is german :).

    • +1

Do they have the channel 11 promo character voice-over audio as well!

      • now the voices on that commercial are hilarious!!!!

the chick and the guy do it perfectly :).

        • There's also the 'break-dancing' geordi la forge on Foxtel commercials. :)

  • I tried but I failed

Buying from Zavvi is like entering transdimensional space - the blu rays may be below this price by the time your big box set finally arrives. How old is this set anyway - 5 years?

  • don't hold your breath that they'll actually ship this to AUS… i wanted to buy the big bluray movie collection and they won't ship it… so if you ordered chances are they'll cancel your order

plus if you haven't got a region free player this is bloody useless anyway

  • I paid $270ish for the complete DS9 set so this is a very nice bargain compared to that. I'm waiting for the remastered blurays though but if you don't care about that then this is too good to pass up.

  • Region Free DVD players are pretty common place, check http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks for unlock codes on yours.

  • Good price! I picked up the entire set of Voyager at JB online for $160 in their post-Christmas/New Year sale at the start of this year, and I thought that was a bargain price! :-)

  • I pre-ordered GT5 from Zavvi, waited, waited, 2 months passed and received an email saying order cancelled, amount refunded. No explanation, no apology. Nothing.

Least with Amazon.co.uk we get great prices, fast delivery and great service…

  • Web site shows 98 pound, not 95 dollars.
