Any suggestion of getting a desktop PC

hi everyone

do you guys have any suggestion of getting a desktop PC for home office

basically, it would be used for coding (web developing), browsing web pages and watch YouTube or movies, casual gaming (rare) and no heavy photo editing

budget: $1000 just for the pc itself, I have other accessories. plus hope it is upgradable

thanks guys

Lots of deals on PCs here on Ozbargain from Techfast. They tend to cover most price points

I get some contact from big w and target to cover the top of my desk, some pretty good designs out there.

Ikea sells desktop's separately. If all you are using it for is a standard computer and office supplies I have no worries about the load.

Most desktops and chairs are designed for the top of the desktop to sit at 700mm, so take that into account when selecting your desktop.

I personally have used some of that checker board pine that Bunning's sells as a desktop as it looks nice, is strong, soft and smooth. I suggest a thin finish in many layers as I have found it is slow to absorb and will bubble with thicker finishes.

If you want to cheap out you could always consider a solid door. They are a good depth and a two meter desktop is great for productivity.

If you want to fancy it up you can always get some edging. The problem with edging is you don't want to see the nails and just using glue isn't enough (because you can't really compress edging with out marking the edge). Punch the nail in deep then cover the nail with a nude pine putty, let it set then cover with finish.

To help with cooling and cable management I always place my desktop slightly off the wall. I find any further has limited effect. This has the added effect of limiting marking.

I think OP means desktop PC, not a desk top! LoL

Good advice there! I like ones with drawers both sides as well, not just on one side.

      • I don't mean to be rude and correct you [I actually do ;-) ], but OP asked for a desktop, not a desk.

While we could argue back and forth on this point and I can think of examples contrary to what I am about to say, what you are describing would be a desk. I am all for draws in a desktop, but unless this type of 'desktop' you describe has a uniform height (say because a PC is built in it) then it would be a desk and not a desktop.

A very simple mistake to make. I, stupidly, though OP was asking about building a computer when I read the first few comments. But the complete lack of requirements assured me that OP must of been looking for something that 5 minutes of googling can't discover.

OP a budget would help narrow things down :)

  • This build should handle typical office work loads.

Sorry guys, it meant to be desktop PC

Once again do you have a budget in mind? You also need to account for buying peripherals such as a keyboard and monitor. You could either purchase a prebuilt PC, such as Techfast system, or in-fact make your own. It's up to your personal choice…

      • around $1000. just for the pc. but hope it is upgradable

I would recommend a custom build. I built some machines for work for our Web Developers, Tech Guys and Designs. Cost about $1800 all up for the box with i7 CPU, 500GB SSD, 32GB (with room to expand to 64GB in the future), dedicated graphics card for 3 monitors, decent box with power supply and a "gaming" motherboard.

Great machines. I built 5 and they are brilliant. I use one of them for work, multi task with 3 screens and never had a performance issue. I have spotify, google chrome, google chat and heap of other stuff running without a problem.

  • For your needs a nice small form factor like a NUC would be good. Takes minimal space, can be mounted at the back of a large monitor to make it even unnoticeable.

If you go for a higher end like a hades canyon nuc you can play some games and watch 4k movies without a hitch. Great thing about a nuc is you can bring it along say if you travel since its quite portable. I carry mine whenever I have road trips, stay in Air BnB, plugin to the TV and got access to all my apps and movies.

    • sff looks nice, but is it bit hard to upgrade?

      • Some parts are not upgradeable, also depends on your setup, there's lots of permutations beyond intel NUCs where the upgradability is potentially better but at the cost of bigger form factor. Even with full desktop you'll find there's a limit anyway with mobo+cpu as chipsets evolved. With GPU you can always use external GPUs now so you don't necessarily need to upgrade your internal SFF gpu.

But generally, yes limited upgrade path in exchange for portability & better space efficiency.

      • Zero upgradability

        • Not true. You can definitely upgrade storage and ram.
