I am after a laptop for my mum so she can surf the internet, check emails, etc. It doesn't need to be powerful, Just something she can set up in the lounge room and use, then pack away when she is done.

$300 is way too expensive mate, that is only worth $200 tops. I sold a similar laptop to yours for about $180.
For $300 you can buy a brand new Lenovo with a AMD Fusion CPU + 1 year warranty.

Personally I bought an ex-lease from grays online, total cost was about $160. Machine is a bit heavy but works fantastically, battery gets about 1 to 1.5 hours. Dell D630.
For a brand new full sized laptop, the best seems to be this one from Lenovo at $289 (after cashback)
