Why Do People Talk about Getting a Phone Plan and Cancelling It Straight Away?

Hi All,

Just curious why people would talk about getting a new phone plan, and having it cancelled straight away?

for example, if you would to get an iphone, would it be cheaper to get it on a new plan, cancel the plan within a few days, and pay for the phone and cancellation fees rather than buying it outright?

thank you.

  • Yup usually if it’s cheaper to get a product or their are special offers on sign up (such as Telstra+ Points).

  • Yup, the common one is Telstra have an early termination fee of about $540 on their $69 plan. JB often have phones for $0 or $199 on that plan. Sign up, get phone, pay early termination fee. Done.

Vodafone used to always discount the phones to get people on board, but they've killed that off now. For example the iPhone SE used to be $599 (way cheaper than retail) so just sign up and cancel. They've moved to "it's priced at x if you stay connected for 24 months" though which is a shame.

  • In some cases paying the early termination fee is less than the benefit (be it a new phone or gift voucher) which allows you to game the system or pick up a far cheaper phone be it through good guys or JB hifi

  • +2

Cause they think having a check on the credit report etc is worth a few $$$ savings

  • So if I want a new phone, vodafone is out?
Choices left are Telstra, Jb or Tgg?

    • Check previous deals with high + votes. People explain how it works there. If you wait another one will come along (maybe not with the phone you want though).
