Best >75" TV ~ $5k

Hello OzBargain TV gurus,

I'm in the market for a new TV - 75" or bigger. Happy to spend around $5k if necessary. Main purpose is for watching sport (Kayo), Netflix and some FTA (ABC News breakfast mostly and Ice Road Truckers on 7mate occasionally). No console gaming.

I haven't bought a new TV for around 8 years and am well out of the loop. What would your current recommendations be? Anything to look out for? Is there anything coming out in the near future I should be waiting for?

Thank you in advance.

Edit: Would a 65" OLED be better? 75" would fit the space better but OLEDs around this size seem ridiculously expensive.

Consider spending less than $5k on the TV and putting some amount towards wall mounting, a soundbar, things that enhance the viewing experience.

Something like a Sony X9000H 75" and a Sonos Arc Soundbar would be a great combo.

  • "Would a 65" OLED be better?"

Yes pair a 65" LG CX OLED with a high-quality soundbar for about $4000 all up

I would suggest the Samsung the 75 inch Q95T. Costs about $4,550 on the Samsung EPP Portal. Easily one of the best picks (if not THE best) for a TV of that size in that price point.

Else, the Samsung 75 inch Q80T at around $3,400. Use the money saved on a good sound system setup.

Yes an OLED would look better but it is ridiculously expensive and IMHO sacrificing the size advantage of a 75 inch for a 65 inch for slightly better picture quality when compared to premium QLEDs at around the same price point, doesn't make sense.

If your TV is 8 years old a Hisense Q8 will be a significant upgrade, with excellent, inky blacks (but not quite OLED) and reasonable image processing. Last I checked 75" were going as low as $2,200 ($1,800 with connections) the 85" ~$3,300.

Q8's are not perfect. Off axis viewing is poor, some have ghosting patterns for some colours and the motion smoothing can create blocky halos around fast moving objects, but whirlpool believe it is significantly better than the completion at it's price with a better picture $1k to $2k more last time I checked (and no built in ads 6 months after purchase, unlike LG/Samsung).

An Arc or a Samsung HW-Q950T will be a significant upgrade. Both soundbars sound great by themselves, but if you want a sub or rears, Sonos sell's the subs and individual bookshelf speakers (for rears) separately (Samsung supplies them with the Q950T).

    • where are you finding a Q8 for $2200? or $1800 even better? thanks

      • Check the Whirlpool Hisense 2020 thread.

        • I think you are mistaken either for 65" Q8 or 75" S8. I cannot find anything on whirlpool or ozbargain with Q8 for anywhere near $2200 let alone $1800.

          • @Stuntdriver: The 75Q8 has been bought for $2k.You need the right sales person and the right sale. If you can get an industry discount, $1800 seems feasible.

I have heard of the 85Q8 going for $3300. A five minute browse found $3,800. If that was the best I could do I would wait as Hisense and TLC usually smash these numbers late December, but this year might be different (due to the lateness of the 2020 range).

            • @This Guy: yeah maybe $2000 USD or one that fell off the back of a truck! Cheapest i have found is around $2600-$2700.

              • @Stuntdriver: There are a few 75Q8's in that thread bought around $2400. It depends on the incentives the manufacturer is offering the retailer and the sales person. But I know of one that was bought for under $2k.

  • Thanks for the responses. This gives me a great starting point of TVs to look at. I have a Yamaha soundbar and sub I'm still really happy with so don't need a new one. Definitely interested in getting the TV wall mounted though. Thanks

  • Definitely go the bigger size if you can
