iPod Nano 1st Gen Product Recall + Free Replacements

The recall notice was posted on the support section of Apple’s website, with the following statement:

Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.

This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.

Apple recommends that you stop using your iPod nano (1st gen) and follow the process noted below to order a replacement unit, free of charge.

Your iPod nano serial number will be checked to verify that it is eligible for this program. You will receive a replacement unit approximately 6 weeks after we receive your current iPod nano (1st gen).

If you still have an iPod Nano 1st gen lying around, this might be your chance to score a free (new) iPod Nano.

do i get the latest gen?

  • +1

    THANKS!!!

will try it out, we found our iPod Nano G1

  • My first gen Nano not eligible. I think it might have been purchased prior to Sept 2005. Oh well.

    • September 2005 is when they were originally released. I had a negative response when i first tried, just tried again and it got accepted, give it a go.

  • Thanks heaps mate.
Just found my old 1st Gen Nano lying around. I stopped using it as the battery wasn't holding charge.
Also turns out that mine is eligible.

  • Confirmed that the replacement unit will be the 1st gen as well

    http://mashable.com/2011/11/13/ipod-nano-replacements/

  • Just got an email for this. It looked fishy so I had to look it up to confirm. Hopefully they send a new nano as opposed to a refurbished 1st generation.

  • Has anyone had any follow-up on this??

I applied at the time I saw this post, and still nothing has been sent to me to post my iPod.

    • The instructions are confusing. Take your iPod and the printed shipping label to the post office. Get them to scan the barcode, and instructions will come up for them. That is, stop waiting for a box to arrive.

      • That sounds just like the return instructions for an Austar box - just what deevan says, take the product, and the printed label to po - they will give you a receipt for it and pack it up then send it off for you.

    • don't you wait 6 weeks for the box to come(the box to put your ipod for return)

      • "Apple will send you a box with shipping instructions to mail your iPod nano to us.
Apple will then send you a replacement iPod.
Please save a PDF of this page for your records. You can check the status of your
request via Check My Repair Status using your Repair ID, shown on the left of this
        page."

Yep I was confused by that.

If you actually read the instructions further down, it tells you to print the label and take it to AusPost.

Guess I was confused by that original part, because I've waited for packaging before that comes from the shipping company for items like my laptop.

Will send it off after the weekend then…

        • How do you get the PDF? I failed to save mine thinking they will be sending me a box.

        • I don't know how to get the PDF again.

Luckily, I just saved the webpage as a PDF because it told me to at that time, so I still have the barcode number and instructions.

Do you still have your repair ID number?? Maybe you can do something with that.

  • Hmm, should I exchange mine?

Mine is an exclusive McDonald's iPod Nano that I won from them as an employee. At that time it was one of 50 in Australia. It has the golden arch and "i'm lovin' it (TM)" below it.

I already have a new generation iPod Nano, so should I try selling it as Maccas merchandise on eBay?

    • +1

Well, you also have to consider the risk of somebody sniping the bid just for fun and forcing you to sell the iPod for a much lower price than you anticipated. But you can always set the starting price a bit higher.

I'm not sure of the demand of these things though — I'm sure there are some manic iPod collectors who would buy that off you for a decent price.

I already have a new generation iPod Nano,

I'd say sell it, besides you will only get a 1st gen Nano in return which will also carry little value anyway.

      • Yeah, I'm not sure. I think I will go with the eBay option. Did a search but couldn't find a similar item.

Oh…I thought they send you back the latest gen Nano? So they send you back a refurbished 1st gen one?

    • +1

Probably not ebay. Not enough people know about this to search for it. I'm sure there are Maccas collectors out there though. A simple google search turns up several websites. Might be worth contacting some of them to see whether they would be interested.

    • FUNGUS - this guy might want to buy the iPod…

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/56698

  • I just wonder if they will really send back a 1st gen nano (lol they had that much left over??). Mine just changed status to: Step 3 Return - December 5, 2011: Product replacement pending

Wonder if anybody got theirs back yet, who can confirm which Nano they are giving back.

    • Have you got yours back yet?

When did you send it in via Aus Post? How long has it taken so far and for the status to change?

Can you confirm which Nano they are sending back?

      • OH, I just read the opening post which says 6 weeks to return… surely it shouldn't take that long if they are only sending it within Australia. We'll see I guess…

  • I've been waiting for a box to arrive, but I've just re-read the email that they sent me on 15 Nov confirming the replacement request and it looks like I was meant to take it to Australia Post to get it changed. I've been waiting for this box to be sent to me as that was what was written 'Apple will send you a box with shipping instructions' so I'm not sure what to do since it says I need to send it within 10 days, but that was ages ago lol..

    • I was waiting for my box to arrive as well.

But I've sent it in via Aust Post now. I never got a message saying anything re: the 10 days, so I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.

  • anybody got a new one yet or any other feedback mine stands at
10 December 2011: Product replacement pending

    • +1

No. I'm up to step 3 now. They are processing it or something like that. Last contact was December 13th.

Not expecting anytime soon… Probably well into the New Year is when I'll get the next update.

  • Posted mine off a few weeks ago and they only received it yesterday. Very slow. Maybe they are running out of 1st gen ones and will start replacing with new models.

    • You may now jump in joy and rejoice. Apple is reportedly shipping out 6th gen nanos.
      http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/20/apple-reportedly-swapping…

    • That's great!!

Did you get the 6th Gen or the 1st Gen??

      • Lol nope. Wasn't eligible since I had a 2nd gen, not a 1st gen.

    • +1

Just received confirmation email that my replacement shipped out yesterday. Serial number suggests it is a 6th Gen! Nice!

      • Nice! Meanwhile I am stuck with a broken 2nd gen iPod. Sad pandaface.

  • Got the first one back today (both me and my girlfriend managed to find our old ones), and it looks like the newest one to me, unless the second newest one looks the same. Either way, it's the small square one with a clip at the back. Silver and 8gb.

    • Hot damn! Mailed mine out today - thanks to whoever figured out I needed to go to Aus Post, I would've been waiting for that box forever!

Now to wait for the shiny replacement. :D

    • Damn!! That's great news!!

Do you remember when you sent it?? Just wondering a turn around time because I can't wait to hopefully receive mine? What date did it show on your Step 1 and Step 2 in the repair status!

Caught a glimpse of the iPod nano at Big W today and it was $148 for the 8GB!!

      • Not sure when we sent them (mid to late November I guess), but we took them to the post office at the same time, and my girlfriend got her "we received your ipod" email several weeks before me. Anyway, she received the actual ipod between Christmas and new years, and I got my "we have sent your ipod" email a couple of days ago so should have it on Monday or so.

  • This is fantastic. Managed to dig out my 1st gen nano which my husband inherited from me. Being an early adopter/massive impulse buyer will pay off for a change. Thanks Scrimshaw, I would have had no idea.

    • Agree. Thanks to deeevan who cleared up the AusPost thing, and also to Scrimshaw for the initial posting of this thread.

I wouldn't have known otherwise I don't think. And had been comtemplating chucking out my old iPod for a few months - just was too lazy!

  • Apple has finished my repairs, and sent me email with the new Serial Number for Replacement. Punched it through, and it is a 6th gen serial number.
Even better, it comes with 1 year warranty!

    • Nevermind no 1 year warranty, guess at the time when i checked it their request to get warranty voided hasn't gone through yet, now when i check it is voided.

  • I've already seen one of these on gumtree with a guy trying to sell his replacement 6th gen for $110 (they don't come with a case or earphones).

    • +1

Not many people like the new iPod Nano 6. I think most prefer to pay extra for an iPod touch for the video capability, wifi and games.

IMO the new Nano is a big step back from the previous series.

      • Well I think I read somewhere that the new Nano is for a niche group.
        That is, for exercising.

If you want videos and games, then yes, just get the bigger iTouch. But if you need a clip on and something smaller, then that's where the Nano comes into play.

Who knows, their iTouch sales might be up because of this…

      • I agree, the new iPod nano is a big step backwards for me.

      • agreed.

I think the 5th gen, had video recording and that was pretty good.

  • Still waiting for a damn box from Apple. Since 21/11/11

    • No box is coming. Read replies above. The supplied instructions are a bit contradictory, but if you read it carefully you'll realise that you just take in the paper you get when you first register to the post and send it off. The post does all the packaging etc. Had you handed it in right away as you should have, you would have been receiving the ipod right about now :)

  • Got second ipod today, also a silver 8gb. Just FYI :)

  • I got my iPod 6th gen today!! And it's just that… a silver 8GB. You can follow updates through this thread… but basically, I:

Sent my 1st generation away at AusPost on 7th or 8th of Dec.
Apple received the product and gave me an email update on the 13th of Dec.
That service request was approved on the 3rd of Jan, and the 6th generation was shipped.
Received my 6th generation on the 10th of Jan.

So about a month's turn around for those interested…

  • Thanks for this. We had 2 of these and would be good to get them replaced.
Isn't it interesting that I bought these direct from Apple and the sale is logged against my Apple ID, yet Apple failed to contact me regarding the possible chance of fire and replacement. So glad I read the posts above, the Apple instructions clearly say "Apple will send you a box", straight the the Post Office for me.
