Need Advice for Where to Sell Car and How Much

My family wants to sell our cars.

Car 1 is a 2013 Volkswagen Golf 90 TSI with 80005km driven on it

Car 2 is a 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan 147 TSI with 133511 km driven on it.

Can someone help me out with how much we can sell these cars for and what website? I live in Melbourne btw if that helps.

careful there OP might think your being serious lol

    • I work on an oil rig & willing to pay 10k over the asking price

  • are you wanting to buy a new car? if so, while you will get less money, consider trade in

    • yeh I am. Will look into that thanks

You could possibly check carsales or Redbook, may seem a bit crazy, but it does work.

    • If it a common enough car then it is possible to look at Redbook, also what other sellers are selling similar models of similar year and kilometers to work out an appropriate price. Add a little bit on top for negotiation.

      • Yes, I was being sarcastic.

  • search for your car on carsales or other car selling websites, you'll find what prices they are going for. You can compare mileage and stats, and even learn how to write a good description of your vehicle by copying/modifying the descriptions you like.

    • ok thanks

you'll find what prices they are going for

You'll see what prices they are being advertised for, not what they are being sold for. Just something to keep in mind.

    check on redbook?

    • Redbook & Glasses guide book charges for valuations.

      • You don't have to do a paid valuation with Redbook …you can just check their second-hand price guide …

        • You can,but if you want a correct valuation,they will charge.As you said,it is only a “guide”.

@Hackney: The valuation is no more or less correct than the guide - it's just someone's opinion of the value of your car. Having a valuation by someone doesn't mean you will get more for your car. Using the free guide and prices for similar cars online (on carsales, gumtree etc) should tell you what you need to value your car at (and the bonus is that you don't have to pay for it).

    Sell through Ozbargain Classifieds

No need to advertise, I'll give your a carton of VB for the Golf and I'll make it a carton crownies for the Tiguan.

Either that or you could search for similar ads on carsales and use that info to then advertise yours there accordingly.

I sold my car on Facebook Marketplace. Easy and free to list, can have up to 20 photo's. Easy to block anyone that is crazy.

  • I'd do it via Car Sales, buy yourself a $50 burner mobile, Car Sales has a vehicle valuer built in to the ad creation too.

Once you have the ad urls, can paste into FBM for extra exposure.

Check your car value on car sales, and list comparablely.

Don’t go down the Facebook and gumtree suggestions, people are just having a laughing

5+ years ago I would have most luck selling through Gumtree, between that and CarSales.

Last few cars I've sold were most successful through Facebook Marketplace — there's just so many people constantly browsing it, your ad can get a lot of exposure.

Keep in mind the cars I usually sell are only going for $2-4k though, so there is a particular audience.

If you're looking for $10k+ you might want to go with CarSales, as others have suggested.

as said, get the free valuation range for the model from:
    https://www.carsales.com.au/car-valuations/
If you car was in excellent conditioned, fully serviced and low mileage for age, price it a bit higher than the Red Book value. Allow some extra for negotiating. If it's in poor condition, high mileage, value will be lower.
We used FB marketplace (free) but be prepared for many time wasting text enquiries and lowballers (who never mention viewing the car). Can be a stressful process, but you just need to be able to identify a genuine buyer. We sold in less than a week, for a bit more than the Red Book range, and had maybe 40 text enquiries. I think Carsales has the same time wasters.

  • Last couple I've sold I've advertised on CarSales, Gumtree, and Facebook - both ended up selling on Facebook. CarSales just had all of the trade in dealers contacting me, gumtree all of the scammers and lowballers, and Facebook surprisingly was the best with genuine people. Both sold easily for the price I was after on Facebook (and they were priced in the 15-30k range).

    • Interesting, I've sold numerous things on FB marketplace with mixed results. Got some low ballers while some who were great to deal with. I'll give that a shot.

  • Look online at various websites including Gumtree to see what the going rate is?

Look at real world prices not generic Redbook values.

I know as a buyer of a car or phone or anything I'll make sure to research and look at multiple websites and to gauge prices so I'm not overpaying.

Most people are savvy enough to look for the best possible deal so if there's many cars available there's room for negotiation.
