Ways to reduce humid shop

Hello,

I have a retail store with a bunch of fridges. There really isn't much ventilation besides the front doors which I leave open all day. The fridges generate a lot of heat, good in winter not so much in summer and as there isn't much air flow the shop gets ridiculously hot.

At the moment I just run the AC on majority of the day which I then set my doors to automatic. I went out and bought a small dehumidifier which did a little difference but nothing significant. I thought about buying a bigger one but essentially I'd just be running that all day too.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations what I can do in my situation? The AC does the job but the cost of running it all day every day will start to add up.

Thanks

Can you install an extraction vent above the fridges?

    • I'm not too sure I'm in between other shops and there are units above me but will definitely look into this thanks

  • A few large exhaust fans near the back of the shop near the ceiling? Should send the hot air out and draw cooler air from the front door. Or maybe one of those mega fans that Bunnings uses

    • Them bunning fans are just a little overboard but will check out exhaust vents lol

  • Get a dehumidifier, problem solved

I'd need two or three dehumidifiers though. The power running those all day might as well just use the AC?

Give these guys a call and see what they reckon. They were quite helpful when we bought a home dehumidifier from them a few years back.

    • will look into them. thanks for the recommendation!

      • No worries, the unit I got is still going strong after 7 years.+

  • Is the problem heat or humidity?

Dehumidifiers are effectively small heaters - one side gets cold, collecting condensation. But thanks to the laws of thermodynamics, the other side gets hot.

As a rule of thumb, larger machines are more efficient than smaller, so running the big AC will use less power than multiple small dehumidifiers (also the AC probably moves the heat outside).

    • This is what I am thinking. The cost of running other things/multiple appliances etc, could just be easier and somewhat the same cost as just running the AC

  • Fans. BIG FANS

  • Ceiling fan
