[NSW] Reduce Your Bin Capacity to Save $ @ Selected Local Councils

1844

We downgraded our bin litre size from 120L to 80L and rates for inner west Sydney went down from $544/pa to $470/pa.
With a 55L Bin this world go down to $443pa.
A simple saving since we never get anywhere near filling out bin each week!

Wish dog walkers would pick up their dogs business in the first place

    • wish that dog walkers would put their dogs business in their own bins and not into my newly emptied bin.

      Talk about a victimless crime.

      • I’m the victim who gets squashed bags of poo in the bottom of my bin that inevitably break and I have to wash out the bin. It’s disgusting

        • I haven't washed a bin in my entire life and it's caused me no problems. I do find it funny when I see people paying to have their bin cleaned.

  • Thanks OP!

I will save close to $191 annually by switching.

I've seen them empty yellow and red tops into the same truck more than once . Time for 1 bin only , or a skip , and let them work it out . Hate me all u want but fact .

  • Haha my council in WA didnt give us a choice. They also alternate week pickup red/yellow bins. It's tough being an amazon addict.

  • How is this a deal? Isn't this the same as buy the smaller pack and pay less?

    • Some people don't need the extra bin size, so could opt to save instead. That's the deal.

Anyway, this is a COVID era post, when people were losing their jobs en masse more than now, so any saving was a blessing.

Maybe the council should remove the waste of having tampons in mens toilets

More like the other way. $74 to get rid of 2080L (52x40L) of waste sounds like a bargain to me.

Down-vote all you like, but first show me anywhere else you can get rid of over 2000L of waste for $74. Some people legitimately need to dispose of this amount of waste. Like large families actually need bargains to get by. I pity the people who need to downvote strangers to feel good about themselves. It keeps OzB toxic.

…. and next year… the rates go back to $544.

    • And then the councils bring out a new innovative product named the Garbage Bucket. For a 10% discount on your rates you can go from a 80L bin to a 4L bucket. It appears to be what the masses want!

  • My local council didn't even give us this option
We were already using 120L red bins with weekly pickup
They've now forced us to fortnightly pickup still with 120L red bins and no reduction in rates 🤬

Yeah the no reduction in rates is a bit of a stitch up tbh, I do think it's a good initiative though. The amount of waste I (a single human) produce already disgusts me and my brain just can't even begin fathoming extrapolating that out to everyone else I see. I do try to be somewhat conscious of recycling properly and reducing the plastics I buy, but I'm also a consumer and that just leads to… well me buying junk. So I'm not a great example.

I feel like if we all had to deal with our own rubbish we'd be a lot more sustainable. I wish the billionaires would throw some money at making packaging and products wayyyyy more environmentally responsible.

  • 3 years later, rates will go back up to previous levels. No benefit, only worse outcome for residents.

  • How do they know that I'm paying for a 80L bin and not a 150L?
What if someone were to buy a big 150L from Bunnings, swap lids and leave it out front?
Do they know that my address is an 80L bin and look out for it?

    Surely not?

  • this is ridiculous trying to incentivise less waste. the incentives need to be a lot bigger .try to find a local skip or use a public bin I say.

  • People will then litter the streets with excess garbage.
