Do Stores Honour Warranty if Bought off Marketplace or Gumtree?

Hello,

I’m planning to buy a second hand washer dryer as a new one is too steep of price for one person

Would like to know if stores such as Harvey Norman or jb hifi etc will honour remaining warranty if The receipt is not under my name and credit card?

As some sellers on Facebook or gumtree says they have the receipt but wondering if it’s any used anyway ?

Much appreciated!!

…unless you live in Outback, etc.
(in which case, add $100-250, IME)

      Generally, warranty protection goes
to the one, who buys it New, from an
      auth'd vendor.

But some great companies try go
      beyond (mediocre) norms, that lesser
co's depend on for their survival, or
      so it seems.

If Buyer 1 never filled-out paperwork
& gives you the receipt, showing the
purchase date (= start of warranty-
      period), I'd guess you'd be in a
      better position.

Some Buyer 1's may try to assist
      those who've bought items from
them (unless you "drove a hard-
bargain" to save, eg, $50 Off their
asking price, & they were left feel-
ing stressed, etc. by the exper.).

      By all means, RTF Warranty-doc't,
if you haven't already done so.

There is your answer, albeit likely
to be almost hidden in a sea of
      "legalese."

If you have a Seniors Card, get &
read any info booklets they may
      have to send (free).

(When I got mine, I browsed it &
read some useful bits, that later
came in handy, as late as 2-3 wks
      ago:

If you want to return an item, eg,
for being "Not Fit for Purpose"
(as the items were, in my case),
but managed to lose the Tax-In-
voice / receipt (as we Oldies do,
from time to time…), but you
-have- a clear idea of what you
paid for them (& a line in your
bank statement or, as I did, on
      your smartphone that matches
the Price x Qty & Date of Pur-
      chase, you should be right.)

In my case, others may -also-
have told 'em these items were
"Not Fit for Purpose" as they'd
      already Dropped the Price from
      $5 each to $2. to clear-out the
      remaining stock.

      (I'd bought Hot Water Bottles,
      but hadn't checked for Brass
      inserts, that secure stoppers,
      without them getting jammed,
or - worse - leaking, after giving
the False feeling that it's closed
enough to preclude a leak, etc.)

I'd bought a mix of 2 sizes, so,
I had to "Show My Maths" to
      prove, ie, that:

      Total (in Banking app) =

      of smaller ones purchased

x price of that size (pre-clear-
      ance price drop) +

      of bigger ones purchased

x price of that size (again,
      pre-clearance price drop)

      Luckily, I remembered the
      original prices… & got my
full refund. If it weren't for
      my Banking app transaction
      being consistent with the qty
      of each size, purchased, the
      manager advised, that she'd
      refund using the Lower,
      Clearance Price, showing on
      the shelf.

      PS This was a Cheap-As-
      Chips, buyer beware…

      • PS 2 eBay has some vendors
        who offer Both:
        + lower prices &
        + warranty

Gumtree is less likely to pro-
        vide that level of support,
but some will offer to help a
buyer, later, if they can by
        suggesting (to their vendor),
        that, eg, they've moved (to
        your address) & need war-
        ranty service there.

        (Make sure your warranty
        document doesn't Exclude
        change of address…)

Is the purpose of your comments/post to convey your message/point across? Or to make the vertical scroll bar as tiny as possible?

  • Generally Warrantry is not transferred. There's a reason why the item is cheap. You buy it as it is and take the rosk. If you want warranty by it new.

generally, a proof of purchase is needed for warranty.

If you can provide a proof of purchase, the manufacturer might not hassle you.

  • Just skip the middleman and go straight to the manufacturer.

    Or

    It was a gift.

    • on a side note re: Gifts.. some stores can give a gift receipt when asked its great to be able to provide proof of purchase without showing the actual cost on the receipt.
im surprised that places like Big W, Kmart Target etc dont offer a selection on the screen for 'print Gift Receipt' or 'include gift receipt with customer receipt'.
surely it would be an easy update to the software from the vendor..

You would need to check the warranty info of each company, to ascertain whether they allow transfer to subsequent owners. Bosch AU example below:

    https://www.bosch-home.com.au/metapages/warranty

The following conditions will compromise and in some cases cancel your warranty:

"whilst this warranty applies to the original owner only, however subsequent owners may still have rights under the Australian Consumer Law."

Best to give the said company a call/email before buying.

  • Yes I've heard of people giving their original receipt over to buyer with warranty included

    • When I sell my stuff secondhand that is still under warranty, I usually provide them a copy of the receipt. (Or original and keep a copy for myself)

  • Thanks to all that has chipped constructive comments !

I too myself when sell my things under warranty I would give the receipt but don’t know if it’s any help
