Media Players with Internal HDD capabilities

Hey Folks,

This topic has come up in the past, but tech changes so quickly, and so I thought I would ask the following..

Can anybody recommend a decent media player with a built in hard drive, or one that can have one installed internally.

I had a few Noontec V7s versions back in the day, but they are getting on in age, and trying to find something similar today seems so difficult !

I know there are tonnes of media players that you can plug an external hdd into these days, but that’s not what I’m after.

I have a 70 year old father, who like many has been in lockdown for a very long time and I’m hoping to purchase this for him, and load it up with content that he likes.

I’ve got him using one of my old noontecs at the moment, but they don’t play a lot of the newer formats unfortunately, and they are also on their last legs

Any help would be greatly appreciated

just use an external HDD.. take it whenever you want to update the files (thats what i do), and then give it back to him. I'm currently using a Telstra TV2

    • I would, but at his age the less complications the better.

I fear he would get overwhelmed with having to plug things in externally, as he already struggles with what he has.

      • Hot glue the cable and ext hdd.

      • Use a portable 2.5" HDD and double sided tape or velcro to stick it to the player.

Media Players these days don't come with internal HDD and some are even ditching the USB port all together (Chromecast, Nvidia Shield).

What I set up for my folks was Plex.. I run the server on my NAS at home and give my parents external access to my library. Saves them the hassle of trying to figure out how to load content etc ..

Plus Plex is preloaded on many TVs these days so it's quite straightforward.

    • That’s awesome !!

In a perfect world I would do the exact thing, but my old man is extremely simple

What about a large USB thumb drive?

    • Hey mate.. I was originally thinking about that, but many have mentioned that thumb drive USB’s get extremely hot, and eventually corrupt data

      • Many? 2 or 2 million? and surely it would depend on data transfer and device it's plugged into.

There wouldn't be too much data movement on a media player…..but if you're a half glass empty person….

        • I have a tiny 64GB thumb drive that cooks whenever it is left in my pic, whether it’s transferring data or not.

I don’t know millions of people, but Ive certainly seen more than 2 posts about thumb drives overheating

Is price an issue? You could get a beyonwiz v2 which has external hdd capability and plays all formats but will also record FTA TV. It does much more than this but seems to fit the bill?

    • Thankyou for the suggestion
